Louis garneau chrono vs. rocket

does anyone have any experience with either helmet? is the rocket proven to be significantly faster than the chrono?

They are the same helmet, but for the longer tail on the Rocket. Theory and practice both suggest that the Rocket is significantly faster.

I have both and I like the Rocket better. If you want to buy my Chrono PM me.

I don’t believe anyone will dispute that the Rocket is a faster helmet than the Chrono. However, I don’t believe that the difference is anywhere near that as between the Chrono and a standard road helmet.

For myself, I went with the Chrono because I didn’t think it was worth twice the price to gain that last extra little bit of aerodynamic advantage over the Chrono. I also prefered the way the Chrono fit and looked (no ear covers and shorter tail).

Steve

Anyone have pics of the two helmets?

Jeff

I’m with you- the Chrono is surely faster than a standard helmet, and I couldn’t justify twice the price for the Rocket. I used to have a Prologue (got smashed by the airlines when the re-arranged everything in my bike flight case)… it has lower “ear covers”, which really inhibited the use of sunglasses. This steered me towards the Chrono- it has no ear coverings, and I can wear any sunglasses that I want. It’s comfy, too- wears like a regular helmet and I don’t notice any real increase in heat from it. I think it is the best buy in aero helmets in terms of performance for your dollar.

Not helpful info for the question but Nashbar has the Prologue w/windscreen on sale for $79.95 plus you can use the 10% off code (w227).

The Rocket is great as the longer point rest between your shoulder blades and you can feel it touch, so you know you are in the best position possible.

thanks for all the input. still on the fence, we’ll see what my pocketbook says!

This might help confuse you more but here are some recent facts. I was just doing some positioning on a racer in the A&M wind tunnel and this very helmet question came up. This rider was tall at 6’2" but is an accomplished TT rider. I had already gotten most of his position dialed in as far as height and width so we ran a back to back helmet run. The valuable lesson to learn here is that testing at just “0” yaw for multi sport racers is not always going to give the right answer and testing at multiple yaw sweeps cost more money. In the case of this rider his back shaped definently favored one helmet over the other, I have seen the exact opposite these results on other riders however.
yaw Cronus Rocket
0 7.51lb. 7.70
5 7.44 7.45
10 7.33 7.33
15 7.20 7.42
20 7.35 7.53
weighted
avg. 7.37 7.506
approx 40k 53:01 53:20
We also ran the usual -tail up / tail down runs but the results were the same. I also gathered data at every 2.5 degrees between but that makes the list pretty long. In the real world for this rider there is probably 12 - 15 seconds difference between the helmets, sometimes that matters.

Very interesting that the Chrono (I assume that’s the helmet that “Cronus” in your data refers to) was faster for this rider. Do you have any pics of this particular riders position that gave these results, or can you tell us a little generic info like how he keeps his back (flat or hump) and how much drop he actually rides?

Since I’m the same height and use a Chrono, I’m curious how similar our positions really are.

Steve

I actually have some very good pictures of this test…now if I can ever figure out how to post them I will.

put pictures on tinypic.com, then you can put them in a post
.

Any data or have you been testing with the new Giro Advantage helmet as well? I know each helmet works different for each individual, but since most of us can’t buy 3 of 'em and head to a wind tunnel for testing …

When you post the pictures on a host server (like tinypic) you just cut and paste the url in the “Insert Image” dialog that opens up fromt the “Image” icon on the button bar of the message screen.

I have a Chrono and like it a lot. I got it vs. the Rocket because it was half the money and didn’t have the ear coverage. I used it a IMLP last summer and figured that I would be too hot with the Rocket. I did a test ride with it on for 190k on a day that was 31C last summer and it was fine (although I looked like a dork riding a TT helmet all over the countryside in training).

I have a rocket and it works great and I find it is not too hot even on the hot days.

What about the LG Prologue helmet, comparitively? Anyone know?

Here is the Rocket:

Here is the Chrono:

And here is the Prologue:

I was incorrect in my first post. I have the Prologue and the Rocket. I personally like how the Rocket fits better and it feels more aero. One big difference is you can hear more with the Prologue since it doesn’t cover your ears as much.

Here is a pic of the Rocket in action…too bad I flatted in this race!

john,

thanks for the input. when i get the obree tuck position happening on my fixed wheel bike, with my chrono aero helmet, i’ll be sure to send you a picture. it’s going to be fun and fast, no doubt!
