Loud ratchet sound in rear hub

What is it that makes that loud ratcheting sound when people are not pedaling? Is it the cassette or the free hub body? My guess is the hub body. I am buying new wheels and a rear cassette and just want to make sure I don’t get the loud one. lol Any brands that are known for having that loud sound?

Why would you not pedal ?

Free hub body. Shimano is quiet, older king is noisy. Dati is quiet. American classic is pretty quiet.

It’s the freehub. The cassette just sits on the freehub body.

Chris King hubs are known to be loud. Shimano freehubs are pretty quiet. Often loud freehubs can be quieted by adding more lubrication.

The hubs on the current version of the Flo 90’s are pretty loud as well, but then who coasts? It is just annoying pushing the bike to the staging area.

I am trying to have one set for my road bike and tri bike and I don’t want to be that guy with a loud a$$ hub
.

As others have mentioned, Chris King and the new FLO hubs are quite loud. They both kick ass though so I deal with it.

If you are really set on a silent freehub, get a wheel built with whatever hubs neuvation is using - those things are dead silent.

The new CK hubs are a bit quieter.

I’ve heard that. Mine are about 10 yrs old and much quieter than they used to be.

lol
I have no idea if my bike makes that sound or not
.

Shimano is not necessarily quiet. I have a pair of Dura Ace WH-7850sl wheels, and they have a noisy freehub. I suppose the ultegra and lower hubs could be different though.

Chris King hub all the way!! It sounds like a swarm of angry bees following you.

Ding ding ding ding. Got a winner right here.

I wish my R45 hub were louder

Don’t know I have various DA Ultegra xtr and they all range from silent so slight sounds. I tend to rebuild and grease stuff quite a bit so that may help.

Just an FYI diagram from Park Tool.

When coasting, clicking comes from* *forward-rotating Star Ratchet teeth (wheel) moving past the idle spring-loaded Pawls of cassette body. When pedaling, Pawls engage Star Ratchet teeth, thus no clicking and forward propulsion.

Whoah. That grease on those pawls looks sticky.

Loud free hubs are amazing when going down the bike path and you want the folks ahead of you to know your about to pass by and absorb their souls with your amazing to rig pink

In all serious, I like the loud free hub. I always thought it was a sign of a really nice wheel set. And I just really like that noise a lot. Too each his own though.

thank you very much! That diagram was a huge help.

I want my hub to sound like a roller coaster ratchet. The more obnoxious the better.
