I see they added the 2 hour swim practice on Saturday. Is it possible to just jump in the water and do practice swims earlier in the week or are there issues doing this?
I think I heard that swimming in the river apart from the practice swim on Saturday is forbidden.
With the barge traffic on the river, it would be very dangerous to be out in the main channel.
Do you know of any lap pools in Louisville?
The best option is the Mary T Meagher Aquatic Center (http://www.louisvilleky.gov/MetroParks/recreation/aquaticcenter.htm) but the pool is currently closed for maintenance and I don’t think it re-opens until first week of September. May want to double check that. Otherwise best option is probably just trying a one-day pass at the downtown YMCA.
University of L’ville has a nice new pool
Looking for input on the swim at Louisville. I’ve done the race 2 times before so I know what the swim is like. I’m just wondering if anyone has any thoughts or definite information on whether taking the swim with the current as far out in the river as they allow you is the best (fastest)option or if staying close to the bouys in the main stream of people and drafting is the fastest way downstream?
Any thoughts? Anyone try both ways?
Thanks for the input.

I swam further out in the channel last year and was the only one out there, at least that I could see. It was a little odd being out there by myself! It was my slowest IM swim ever (1:10) by 3-5 minutes, but I have talked to a few folks who felt it was a slow year in general. This year I plan to stay closer to the buoys. I feel that the current that was in the river on Sat (strong) was gone by race morning, much to my dismay!
Did the same LY as below after watching the folks that went to the middle in 2007 have “assisted” swim times…last year I went out to the middle to the point that the kayakers were asking me if I was okay…slowest IM swim and really found no noticeable helping current…

Last year there was hardly any current, so times were slow. In 2008 there was a strong current. yes, I wish we could know in advance, instead of it being a crap shoot!!
I swam out in the channel in 2009 (due to advice I was given) and my time was slow. I think the decision to go wide has to be a day of decision since the day before there was a noticeable current that was gone on race day.
