Quite a long read…but the point is that Diana Nyad is a liar, she’s bad for the sport, she makes up her own rules when it fits her, and claims she did something that was done far before she ever came close to doing it.

Thought I liked her before the read…not a shred of respect for her now.

Go forth and debate!

Let me be the first…

Who gives a shit!

So brave. wow.

wow.

Edgy. Trend setting.

I havent read the article, nor do I know much about her. I have seen two interviews with her and although the feat was impressive, she displayed a personality that seemed very narcissistic.

Sounds like the original Finman…

/pink

That’s pretty much where I stand. Could I come within a fraction of what she did? Not a chance in hell.

Is she a still a shitty person, yep.

tl;dr, great athlete, terrible person.

I’m glad you’re so easily amazed.

Let me get this straight… a few knuckleheads doing something that nobody gives a damn about are whining like little bitches about how another one of them did or didn’t do something to their liking. Nyad is bad for what sport exactly??? Swimming extremely long distances??? There’s exactly 10 people in the world who give a shit about this.

So you have a couple people in the world arguing about something monumentally insignificant. And it bothers you for what reason? Like I said, who gives a shit? It’s like watching two assholes argue about the the seven millionth place to the right of the decimal point in the pi calculation.

I think you meant to post this in the Whining, Axe-Grinding Forum.

He did it with a cage, she did it without. I don’t think she has ever said she was the first but she was the first without a cage.

But good on you for hating her.

Good on you for reading the article where she lied about him numerous times and had to be taken to court to finally redact her lies.

Good on you though for being lazy but not lazy enough to drop sarcastic insult.

And for gmono0305rt2, whatever your name is.

Your lack of caring, doesn’t make the situation any less shitty. A man busted his ass decades ago to achieve an incredible feat and had his image ruined and his achievement lost to time because this woman was a piece of shit. And for you saying “no one cares”…yea, that’s why the media had a hay day with it for a week when it happened, but yea, no one cares.

Btw, i’m not even a swimmer and I care. Now get back to being edgy, but don’t forget to wipe the cheeto dust of your finger sbefore your next response.

can someone please check my math? the article said 34:15 for 128.8 miles…

thats :54/100 yds…if im correct in the math,…ummm…dont think so.

Your math is correct.

That does seem insane fast. What are the currents like in between Cuba to the USA though?

I’m not expert here.

“Cage swimmers” tend to be notoriously fast and it can be a huge bone of contention among open water distance swimmers…

i could have sworn i read in one of the nyad articles that she had a 3 mph current with her in her most recent swim…

I think you’re underestimating the effect her swim has had on the athletic population.

You’re talking about Slowtwitch threads in this blurb, right?

Good article. Thanks for sharing.

Oh and it looks like Nyad has a few naysayers in the marathon swimming world that think she is full of shit.

http://www.businessinsider.com/diana-nyad-cheating-conspiracy-theory-2013-9

I am no expert on ocean currents but I tend to think something stinks. Has anyone ever seen someone do an ultramarathon swim with the first 30 miles at marathon race pace, the middle 30 at nearly 3 times expected race pace, then the last 30 miles at just below expected race pace???

Sounds like there is a great story behind the Poenisch swim, too bad it went unnoticed at the time. The story itself seems one sided and therefore is subject to some question marks. (It is also published in POenisch’s home town newspaper, so clearly not independent).

Regardless, Nyad’s performance still deserves respect, she may have completed it second overall, or first under different rules that she set… fine. It’s still something nobody else can do.

It’s still something nobody else can do

Let me fix that for you…

something that nobody else** **HAS done.

subtle, but important distinction.

.

Interesting story. I guess I had heard of that (now) old lady making attempts to swim from Cuba, didn’t know anything about her past history.

Reminds me a little bit of this story (another interesting story)

As others seems to be missing, these stories are not about the events in question, they are about crazy personalities and the lengths people will go to for pride or some other internal reason. I happen to find it quite fascinating.
