I am primarily a runner who takes up triathlon during the summer. Over the past couple years I would run 30-40 miles a week and stay at a consistent weight of 152. I am 5’8. Since starting IM training a month ago, I am down to 146. I probably take in 3000 calories a day and 100 grams of protein. I am eating lots of food during the day and take in carbs / calories while training to avoid too much of a deficit and to keep the motor going. I have muscle and am cut, so I don’t look grossly skinny, but not looking to be under 150. Starting to wonder if I am going to continue losing weight and how to avoid this. I don’t think I can eat more than I currently am.
Lighter is faster. Or would you prefer to be slow?
fAs long as your performance and/or recovery isn’t suffering, it’s all good.
I’m 5’10" and currently at 151. PS - You’re still a fattie.
Agreed. If you’re not experiencing ill effects related to your weight loss, then it’s probably weight you could afford to lose. 3000 calories also seems a bit low for your size and training. FWIW, I’m 5’9 and currently 139 lbs. During running season (which is really marathon and ultramarathon season) I weigh at least 5-6 lbs more, despite logging 40-50% more running miles a week.
Taking into account the larger volumes of swimming and cycling that you can do without crippling your body, it stands to reason that you will lose more weight during tri training. I just returned from a 30 mile ride and lost roughly 3 lbs. I could replicate that ride every day and lose - at the very least - the weight that I accumulate on a day-to-day basis.
Lucky for you, they invented this easy-drinking calorie supplement called ‘Beer’… It even makes you feel better while helping to maintain proper ballast. Win-win.
I can lost 3 pounds from the time I wake up until bedtime without any exercise at all. My weight varies throughout the day.
I usually don’t lose much on rides of any length, but almost always come home a few pounds lighter from a run of 45+ minutes.
What was the 3lbs comprised of? Because you surely didn’t burn 10,500 calories in 1.5 hours of riding.
I have lost close to 7lbs during rides. You loose too much water when you are riding during hot days. 3lbs is very typical. you just got to keep hydrating.
Don’t worry though. you will have that weight back by end of day so don’t think it is gone forever.
