I plan on wearing my tri outfit under my wet suit in my next race. I am curious on what are some of the approaches for attaching race number to tri outfit so it does not rip when taking off wet suit.
One race I tried to tape it to my outfit. Very poor idea. Could do the traditional safety pin attachment but would like it to be flat against my outfit. I think something flat also has less of a chance to rip. In the past I have also just used a race belt on the bike with the number attached. But I would prefer it not blowing in the wind while riding.
Also curious on anyone DQ for not having a race number attached on back during bike leg. This would be a WTC event. I was in a WTC event where it was unseasonably cold and many people had jackets on without a race number visible on their outfit. I assume the race number was under the jacket. This is still with a race number on the helmet, basebar (really little number), and on bike seat post.
Race Belt
the only sensible alternatives to that I can think of would be:
static electricity
nails
weetabix
jam (strawberry works best in my experience)
concentration
.
There is a good video on how to attach a race number to a bicycle jersey on youtube that might help. I cannot post it here because I am at work and my employer blocks access to youtube (but not this site: go figure!). Otherwise I myself use a race belt and just twist it around to the side when the wind blows the number around and the flapping becomes annoying. I imagine you might also have a second race belt on the bottom if it’s that big of a deal, but I would not want 2 belts constricting my body personally.

Someone from Australia posted this same question a few months ago… Juse use five small safety pins and pin the number to the front of the suit. Been doing this for years (Two Ironmans, six half Ironmans, 8 Olympic distances) and have not had any problems. It’s really not that complicated.

I seem to remember someone mentioning using one of the 3M adhesive sprays to hold their number on for a TT (it lays flat for aerodynamics). Might work for this application as well. You should be able to find the technique with a search.
Yeah, I saw a guy at Ironman Canada with a race number glued to his tri suit that he said was some kind of poster glue. Looked quite slick, though we were told not to wear our race number under our wetsuits as it would disintegrate over the day…I don’t know those numbers seem to be printed on tough paper.
In 30-ish triathlons, I have never worn my run bib number on the bike and have never had a problem. Your race number is on your bike, on your helmet (in most races, anyway), and on your arm and/or calf. That should be good enough. Hop off your bike in T2, change shoes, grab your race belt with bib number attached, and put it on while you run.
