Sounds to me like Morpheus is a considerate guy that is looking for a way to wake up without waking his wife. Unlike your wife, apparently his wife is aware when he gets up so he is looking for a way around it. Why do you think it’s necessary for his wife to get up at 4 a.m. for no reason, when it appears there is another alternative, thats what I don’t get.
Dude, thats Dr. Phil in disguise, don’t be hatin’
try Black Hills match grade
or hand turn those babies yourself! PS-I suck at shooting; just love the technique of it
Trust me, she’ll hear him with or without the silent alarm. She will likely get more tollerent as they are married longer and in 3-5 years I’m sure he will be in a much better place.
Your horse is too high IAGIYDW. As for the OP I use my phone on vibrate.
This one wakes you also at the most optimal time:

Is this real? Has anyone ever actually used these things?
I run at 4 am three days a week and use a regular alarm clock set to radio on low volume. My wife is often not even aware that I have been up to run. I think that if you are committed enough to your sport and your family that you are up at 4 then an alarm that sounds for a second or two should be tollerable by your wife. Is your wife also invilved in the sport? If not, is it possible that she simply resents your committment. We run our own business, have twin boys and both are able to get our training in by making some sacrifices for each other. I’ve heard of this problem before and I simply don’t get it.
Your wife is very lucky to have you.
For some reason your post reminded me of this joke:
IAGLIYDW is an avid runner (if truth be known, he’s a triathlon fanatic). Several mornings a week he gets up really early because he has to get his running workouts in.
One morning, IAGLIYDW gets up early as usual, dresses quietly so as not to disturb his wife, puts his running shoes on and steps out into the garage. But it’s raining torrentially, there is snow mixed with the rain and the wind is blowing at 50 mph. So he goes back into the house, checks the weather on the internet and discovers that it’s going to be terrible weather all day long.
He then takes his running shoes off, quietly undresses, slips back into bed, cuddles up to wife’s back and whispers, “The weather’s terrible.”
Without moving, his wife replies, “Can you believe that my idiot husband is out running in it?”
I have the Casio Pathfinder, which has a vibrate mode for the alarm. It wakes me up reliably and not the rest of the household…

Too funny. I saw this in BB&B yesterday and thought - “who would want that?”. I guess you do!

The iLuv® iMM178 Dual Alarm Clock shakes you awake! Even the most sound sleeper will have a difficult time ignoring this alarm. The bed shaker function vibrates your bed or pillow to jolt you awake and/or choose from 7 select and very unique buzzer sounds to wake you in a more gentle fashion.
Sorry, but your attempt at pop-marriage counseling doesn’t work here. My wife is all for my training and we take all kinds of hits for each other so we can both train. But, when quality sleep is hard to come by, every bit counts. Getting awakened at 5:30 and not being able to go back to sleep even though she doesn’t have to get up until 7 and she’s been battling a nasty cold tends to take it’s toll. If I can find a better method that ensures only I am awakend, why not? Suppose in your scenario your wife IS aware that you’re getting up at 4am three days a week and when she wakes up she starts thinking about the business in this economy and how the boys are doing in school and then can’t go back to sleep. All the “tolerance” in the world won’t mean a thing after a while and you’ll be asking the same question we’re asking here, not trying to tell us that there’s something wrong with our spouse.

Do you have a guest room to sleep in on those days?
I’m serious. I can’t think of any other way to sneak out of bed without waking up a light sleeper. I’m a light sleeper myself and have trouble getting back to sleep once disturbed. I feel for your wife.
I have an alarm clock that has my reading light plugged into it. If I set my alarm for 5:30 the light slowly turns on and increases the light level over 15 minutes until 5:30. At 5:30 the noise will start.
But in the last 6 months or so the noise has started one time.
If I hit snooze (never more than once) I get a 9 minute timer where the light levels come up a bit faster.
Even on my very worst days of wanting to stay in bed…I have never had to hit snooze more than one time. I am just awake. And my wife typically isn’t. I feel a million times better when I wake up now. Before the alarm would scare the living sh*t out of me. This is a lot nicer than starting the day looking for my baseball bat and someone to kill.

x2.
My wife is a very light sleeper and has gotten worse since we had our first child 6 years ago. If I wake up and try to sneak out of the room at 4 am, she wakes up and can’t fall back to sleep.
I spend about 6 months of the year sleeping in our guest room on Saturday night so I can get up extra early for my Sunday long ride in the spring and summer. Not fair to her to have her wake up when I do, especially since I am just getting up extra early to impact the family as little as possible. It has worked out well.
That’s been considered. I really just hate the idea. My “shake n wake” wrist alarm is coming today. It was only $15 on Amazon, so I’ll try that tonight. Yeah, otherwise, may try the guest room

Just started having this problem too… (and now my wife is sick and it’s my “fault” because I wake her up to early in the morning to train) did you try any of the suggestions that were in this thread?
Don’t sence any resentment in this statement…especially how you emphasized the word “fault”. I’m sure that your wife would be thrilled that you posted that for the world to see. I love the reference that someone made to Dr Phil. Like it or not it’s precisely this type of problem that ends up fueling his show. Sorry to offend you guys but I know the world is full of couples that rise at differnet hours, using low volume alarms and still manage to function.
Update for anyone looking into this topic: Yesterday I got the shake-n-wake alarm “watch” in the mail. The thing was gigantic. There’s no way I could possibly sleep with that thing on my wrist. Going to try that Casio watch that someone suggested above.
I have one that helps me to end useless meetings that go nowhere without having to glance on my watch.
Good for running intervals too…
Eats batteries, therefor a good quality case (screwback) may be worth the money.
Try an online store for the hearing impaired.
These have a good selection (no personal experience):

hey all,
thx for bringing this back up again. you guys threw out some good options that got my attention…the pathfinder watch that has the vibrating alarm, and the iPhone dock with the vibrating accessory, to name a couple.
haven’t had much trouble lately cuz my work schedule has changed a little. there’s only 2 days a week that I have to get up supa-early. either I’m getting better at being a ninja (is that politically correct?), or my wife is sleeping better. Maybe the fact that it’s only 2 days a week gives her some piece of mind. I’ll ask her tonight when I see her.
thx for the feedback. hope training is going well for all. spring will be here in no time!
the pathfinder watch is now 3 for 3 on waking me up and not my wife. perfect fix.
