Looking for a new disc wheel, what to consider?

So my disc wheel broke during the 70.3 workds and need to buy a new one for an upcoming IM.

Im outdated since I bought my last disc before Covid back in 2019.

What to consider when looking for a new one? Besides carbon material and weight Ive seen some new designs, and hige price difference between the brands… there are some that says that even looking at chinese (well known) brands is worth it since at the end most brands are manufactired there, just make sure to have a good hub…

Any advice or suggestion? I need that extra speed to cut off some seconds (I know).

Thanks!

I just bought the Premier Tactical disc to go on my new bike.

I second the premier disc

Or HED
.

We currently have stock on both rim and disc brake disc wheels.

I just picked up a Premier Tactical disc as well!

Are your disc wheels whole wheels or covered spoke wheels? What is the whomp whomp sounds like?

Ours are solid core wheels. Not a covered spoke wheel.

I just tried to check out and it’s total $864.50 to Texas. Shipping is $12.50, so it’s not bad at all.

Recently, a friend of mine bought a Yoeleo disc wheel(clincher w/rim brake) and it was about $1000 shipped from Taiwan(China?) to Texas. It’s hollow, and quality is pretty good. Light and straight as an arrow with no wobbles. I have a Zipp Super 9 clincher w/rim brake and I don’t know if it’s good or not because I can’t compare with other disc wheels.

(You have not mentioned if you look for rim brake or disc brakes - below is my take now searching for a disc brake disc)

I am in the search of a new rear disc wheel myself as I am getting my first disc brake bike and therefore none of my current wheels work.

On my current Gen2 speed concept (rim brake) I’ve been using a HED JET and I’ve been quire happy with it (weight was reasonable, 21 mm internal width for 25mm tires, cheap, etc) - that hit the spot at the time…
…but it is a cover over a traditional spoked wheel - nothing wrong with that per say and many see that as an advantage (more supple ride) but I have missed the ‘whoop whoop’ sound of a full structural carbon disc my old Zipp 900 had (but sold it, 17mm internal rim width - old technology).

I’ve had a hard time finding a good candidate hitting all my criteria’s (your answer to "what to consider selecting a disc’) :

  • Large internal rim width for the current wider tires trend ( ideally 21mm internal width or more to support well 28 mm tires… although some 19.5 mm width works well w 25mm tires)
  • Hooked rim, tubeless ready (for best tire compatibility and flexibility)
  • Low weight if possible
  • Full carbon construction if possible… although I could settle for HED’s again
  • Affordable price (matters to me but I am going for a performance build so not the first criteria, but not spending $3k for sure.)
  • Good look

(Aero performance between discs will be extremely similar in general… the very best ones might have only 1-3 watts edge on the most basic ones with straight walls is what I gather reading the forum entries here from knowledgeable contributors…)

And I have a hard time finding something I feel good about… There’s nothing out there ticking all boxes. Actually hard to find something missing only one criteria.
Forget most of the high bling / expensive discs - like the Zipp… super expensive, $3K, only 18mm internal width - old school… Marketing is strong there.

Most high end lightweight (Roval 321, Vision TFW) are impressively light, sub 1,000g but super expensive and small internal width ~19, 19.5mm; Vision TFW is ~$4,500?!
DT Swiss ARC 1100 Dicut DB seems to have good reputation, lightweight at 1074g, only 20mm internal width / 25mm ext (optimized for 25 mm tires?), solid disc, but on the expensive side as well ($2,700 for a wheel used only on race days)… also I would not know where to get one around where I am.

My current runners:
Premier Bike looks like a good option: best price up there, rooting for forum contributor, very good feedback on here. However 19.5 mm internal width, on the heavy side… but structural construction. Since I plan to go HED vanquish on front w 28mm tire, not sure I want to run smaller 25mm tire on the back, so not leaning this way in my case. If price matters the most, planning to run 25mm tires, that’s the best bet and the compromise is very minimal to save a lot from what I can tell.

HED - JET or Vanquish - USA made, well known quality and performance, JET is very affordable (alu rim, optimized for 25mm tire, 1268g) Vanquish is more high end ($, but optimized for 28mm, 1135g). However both are spoked construction… no “whoop whoop” sound… I may end up with that. Vanquish also obviously look like a glued cover on a carbon rim:

Latest find: Parcours Disc2 (from UK): Full carbon construction, a whopping 22.5mm internal rim width optimized for 28mm tires (they say ~no aero penalty for 30mm), 30mm external width (bike clearance?), price is reasonable: $1,399 (but who knows about ship/duty/clearance fees shipping from UK to USA)… only downside I can see is a bit heavy at 1,240g (but still lighter than the Premier Bike and HED Jet). I even like the look. I am very tempted to place an order…

I was minded in getting a HED disc (also to match what I what I will go with for the front wheel) before I found the Parcours option.

(Many other discs I looked at but did not mention here as they also were missing at least 2 criterias or more… Enve, Ron, Prime, etc)

Hope this helps and not confuse you more

So what’s my option for a rim brake, 23mm max width, clincher rear disc?

Why a 23mm limit? If tire size is a concern, like on an old cervelo, I’d still go with a 25mm wide brake track and a 23mm wide tire.

I just mounted a 28 mm tire on the Premier disc. I was initially concerned it might be a little narrow to mate well with a 28 mm tire but looks and seems perfectly fine. I thought it would look like a light bulb but not even close. I think it mates great with a 28 mm tire.

Frame clearance. I have a first generation Dimond frame with Tririg brakes. Hed C2 jet rim with 23mm tire on the front which has about 3 or 4 mm clearance on each side. I figured a 25mm rim with a 23mm tire on the rear would be too wide.

Just received a Prime 343 tubeless disc/disc wheel from Wiggle for just over $600. It’s a solid foam core design and spins true. I used a latex tube and GP 5000 23mm to do initial rides and by the looks of it 25-26mm will fit flush. 28mm may be a bit wider than outer rim. They fixed the issue of air compressing the inner body when running tubeless and I had no issue with Shimano 12 speed derailleur rubbing in lowest gear like others experienced. May be an issue with aftermarket OSPW systems? Seems to be same product as Hunt. Overall very happy with the quality, shipping speed, ride, weight and ease of tire installation of this wheel. Can’t beat the price for a unused modern disc wheel that will only be used a dozen times a year.

If finding a good deal for the zipp super 9, would it be a good move to go with that one?

I usually run a 28mm tyre in the back.

i went with hunt. i got it in their summer sale. so far so good. they say it is designed for 26-28, and i run 26. 1200g

Looks great.
This is the same wheel as the Prime 343 from Wiggle by all appearances (just different stickers, maybe accessories).
The prime one is cheaper at the moment, $600 usd on sale.

look similar. 18.7 vs 19mm internal width. slightly different weights, similar spec hub but limited info on each, and the carbon weave diameter is different on each. but then my hunt has a slightly different valve access compartment.

i bet you are right.

Not currently in the market for a disc, but:

  1. Thanks for a terrific post. Must’ve taken a while to write.
  2. FYI - Ron Wheels (a small European brand, but it could apply to other makes as well) have discs ostensibly made for 23-25 mm tires, with a tolerance of up to 28 mm, despite just 18 mm of internal width. It’s just their claim of course, but not sure if internal rim width is that tightly linked with tire width.

I checked reviews and some of them are bad. I like cheap decent quality wheels, but this wheel doesn’t look safe to ride.
