Look Keo pedals: First impression

I tried the new Look Keo yesterday for the first time on an indoor trainer. They have all the attributes of the traditional (larger) Look pedal but “feel” 40-50% lighter due to their extremely small, molded composite body. The pedals use the new Look teflon reinforced cleat that is smaller than the original Look cleat.

Easy in and out, reasonable platform size. The “float” or rotational movement was a little “free” for my taste. The rotation just seemed so easy- that felt odd to me. More like a Speedplay than anything else. I think I would get used to this… maybe.

All in all, pretty nice, especially if you are a Look pedal fan and would like something lighter. There is a titanium axle version due out shortly also. The regular Keo is availabe at Look dealers everywhere now.

I am still waiting for the new Time pedals…

2 questions for you:

the freedom of movement–officially, how many total degrees of freedom are the pedals supposed to have?

do you know what the msrp will be of the titanim-spindled model?

Uhhh, no Sir, I don;t know the total float for a fact. My guess is 14 degrees total- just a guess. This pedal sells for about $149.99 and I think the titanium version is about $299.99 but don’t quote me on that.

I too have tried the Keos and I can concur with Tom that the float feels a little too free. And the float is the full 9 degrees that Look offers. There is no free-arc adjustment on this pedal with I thought a mistake. I would also have thought that, by now, with so many competitors doing it, they could find some way to affix walking pontoons to the edges of the cleat, slowing wear.

The US msrp is $220 for the cro-mo and $399 for the ti.

I got my cro-mo versions from www.sigmasport.co.uk in the UK for the equivalent of $152!

And, again like Tom, I am salivating at the thought of the new Time RXS pedal. Oh how I yearn to try them!!!

I am a Look pedal fan and just got a new bike, so I am thinking new pedals -the ones on the old bike are really beat up. I like Looks and see that they still make the CX6 Ti Carbon, which is actually heavier and more expensive than the Keo. Any reason to go with the CX6 over the Keo, other than cleat fit across multiple Look pedal equipped bikes? Any reason not to go with the Keo vs the CX6?

I used to ride Look exclusively then switched to the new Dura Ace pedals cause I just got tired of the damn squeking and crappy cleats. I saw the new Keos yesterday, and damn if I didn’t want to switch back. (I won’t though) They feel insanely light. I have three concerns: cost, the bearings felt a little gritty, and I’m not a fan of the Ti spindle. Granted you don’t have to get the model with the Ti spindle… Between the Keo and the CX6, I’d go with the Keo.

I was more impressed with the looks of the Time than the Keo. But, my dilemma is my Speedplays are rapidly self destructing after about 8 years and lots of miles. The bearing seals are gone completely and they appear to be just wearing out.

My quandary: wait for the new Times, with unknown ETA; or, get a set of Shimanos, which are a known commodity and readily available. My wife has had a set of Dura Ace for over a year.

What do you think? Keep in mind, I live in Vegas so I’m still riding outside daily.

Thanks. You’re last few stories have been really good. I like the Nice, France story a lot.

You can get the new time pedals from Totalcylcling.com They have them now.
