Longevity of 1st Gen Di2?

I am looking to try out electric shifting, but have limited funds and a lot of 10-speed wheels. Anyone out there bought the original Di2 and have any experience with how it holds up. There is definitely some good eBay deals, but they still cost as much as new mechanical in many cases. Thanks

Good question - still going strong on my 2011 Giant Trinity

It seems to last a long time, but the very first gen was not e-tube compatible and supplies will eventually disappear

second gen and on based on e-tube protocol most all works together so you won’t have an obsolescence. There was a time where the rear derailleurs were going for a fortunes as new supplies disappeared and you needed used parts that weren’t readily available.

personally, I’d stay away from first gen stuff and go with the much more widely compatible products

First gen Dura Ace or first gen Ultegra? Those two are vastly different. First gen Dura Ace is a wholly different wiring design and is effectively abandoned and unsupported by Shimano. Further, you have fewer options for setup. First gen Ultegra is electrically compatible with all the current stuff. If you get in cheap, but then need to replace a part, you can find more of the original stuff or even install a current gen part. Over time, you could incrementally upgrade to current 11 speed without swapping out your wiring.

Do you know if the 1st gen Ultegra was 10 speed? I have five rear wheels that are in good condition and are still 10-speed.

Yes, 1st gen Ultegra 6770 Di2 is 10 speed.

Thanks. You and the others answered questions I did not even know to ask.

I have the 1st generation Dura Ace Di2 and still is going strong. Original battery so probably doesn’t hold a charge as long as new, but I was just charging it once a month just to be certain.

Problem you may have is availability of parts. I did have an issue and trying to figure it out…replaced parts one at a time as the shops computer was only good for the newer e-tube stuff. I could source everything I tried replacing thru ebay, but parts were not plentiful. Was the 1st generation e-tube stuff 10 or 11 speed? If 10, I would probably go that route.
