Long run in Amsterdam area. Need route ideas / advice

I am helping a couple of friends get ready for their first full marathon and as it happens we all have to travel to Amsterdam for work, the same week that they need to get their last long run in. The plan is for Saturday morning jan 25 to do about a 20ish mile run. We have all been to Amsterdam but don’t really know the area very well.

We are staying in center of Amsterdam and I have to imagine trying to do 20 miles in the city would be tough given all the street crossings. We are willing to get a cab and get dropped off somewhere within reason.

Any ideas / advice ?

I occasionally am in Amsterdam for business.
For shorter runs I head to Vondelpark and do loops (it is about 5km round),

For longer runs I head towards Diemerpark and head along the cycle path to Westbatterij and back. Here is one 20km route I mapped - there are a few streets at the start and end, but the aren’t a problem early in the morning when I run.

I did a pretty long run once right out of the airport. There is a network of bike paths from the front door of the terminal. These guys are totally civilized when it comes to that. Of course, this was at 6 am in the dark with no bike traffic. Through the city, I’d imagine there are a ton of bikes at all times on the bike paths, but generally in other dutch cities, the bikers have not run me over. Perhaps the locals can comment on the etiquette of running on the bike paths. It is cool here in Canada because they are called “multi purpose recreational paths” but in Holland, they may actually be exclusively for bikes. I just played the dumb foreigner card, but I suppose I should find out if it is OK.

x2 on Vondelpark recommendation for running. Its a good loop and there will always be plenty of other runners. Watch out for pedestrians during busy times (weekends or after work) and of course cyclists.

You’re fine running on the bike paths in the outer-lying areas. Also remember that the speed limit on these paths is 25 kph, and most are riding cruisers at closer to 15, so there’s plenty of time to get out of the way. Run with the flow of traffic vs. against it like you would in the street.

Running on bikepathes shouldn’t be a problem. So why don’t you create your own route? As you are working in the netherlands you should have seen these signs:

https://www.google.nl/search?q=knooppunten&safe=off&client=safari&hl=nl&source=lnms&tbm=isch&sa=X&ei=Fe_OUs_6LsLB0gWN04DoCw&ved=0CAkQ_AUoAA&biw=768&bih=928

These signs are marking different intersections of a cycling network
By putting all these intersections together one can create a very nice long run, without getting lost.

Have fun!

If you intend to do a 20-mile run I wouldn’t stay in the city. It’s not an issue to run there, but I don’t think you’ll find 20 interesting miles and you will have to stop regularly when crossing streets.

This might be a nice lap to use, just over 10 miles starting in Ouderkerk a/d/ Amstel:

Or you can go to the Amsterdamse Bos and run a couple of rounds. You could even run from the center to get there. It’s around 5 miles from city center.

If you go to Sloterdijk or Halfweg by train you can run around Spaarnwoude

I live in Zandvoort, around 18 miles from Amsterdam, and usually do my long runs in the dunes. This takes about 30 minutes by train, so that might be too much. The Amsterdamse waterleidingduinen are stunning though, no traffic (even no bikes), just wildlife.

Let me know if I need to be more specific.

Run to the Amstel, and run up it. There’s a pedestrian path along the river. Just stick to the edge of the river and you can’t get lost.

Vondelpark is only about 5k, as mentioned above, so 20 miles there would be a chore, although on a Saturday could be good people watching ( I’m not sure that’s as true in January).

I stayed at the Pulitzer on several multi-week work trips last spring. From there, turn left out the door on Prinsengracht, and follow it all the way to the Amstel. You’re on the sidewalk for a little bit along the river, then it turns to a path. You’ll also cross through/past Amstelpark. There’s a gas station where N522 crosses the river on a map that could be a pit stop-this is 11.6k from the Pultizer according to google. You can go out past the gas station for another 5k to get your distance distance.

You’d get to see some farms, houseboats, and some really cool old houses along the river if you’re into that stuff. It’s definitely a different feel than being in the city center.

I’ll also say that if you run early in the morning, running a few miles in the city center is awesome. I felt like things were pretty quiet until at least 8, and you can cover ground much more quickly than during the middle of the day, so it’s possible to see a lot of the city. Once things get going for the day, though, running in the city is exactly as you imagine-stopping at crossings, head on a swivel for bikes, trolleys, pedestrians. It’s a bit crazy, especially on the major streets. However, along the canals the majority of traffic is pedestrians and bikes, not cars, so there’s that going for it.

Finally, I’m not sure about outside the city, but in the city center, I would absolutely not run on the bike paths. They are packed with bikes and have their own merge and turn rules. I promise that in your first day there, someone in your group will forget about the bike lane and walk in front of a bike. They will not be happy with you. The only time I heard someone yell there was when someone walked across the bike lane without looking, it’d be like walking into a busy street without looking, bikes are their cars.

Overall, I was surprised at how much fun it was to run there. Definitely run in Vondelpark at least once, and I’d also run through the city early in the morning at least once as well.

If you need any running gear while you’re there, there’s an Asics store right next to the entrance to Vondelpark (on google as “Asics Flagship Store Amsterdam”). It’s across from the Holland Casino/Hard Rock. They have some group runs you could connect with. There is an outdoor store right down the street also, but I don’t remember what’s its called. If you go out of Vondelpark towards the Asics store, it’s 1-2 blocks down, just past the NH hotel. Finally, there is a running store on Vijzelstraat just south of Prinsengracht, but I never got there while they were open.

There’s also a Starbucks near there on Leidsestraat, 1 block from the American Hotel/Burger King (thinking you may remember those things from a prior visit as they stick out). I don’t see it on google maps, but it’s there. There’s also one near Rembrandt Square (rembrandtplein)-just in case you need a taste of home!

Have fun, Amsterdam is an awesome place, hoping to get back there with the wife for a month or so this summer!

Thanks for the ideas. It looks like everyone is up for venturing outside of town a bit. I can’t wait, at this point in my prep I am sick of all the routes around my house.

I would like more specifics on the routes you suggest especially the dunes run you did and Ouderkerk a/d/ Amstel. Is there a site online with maps (I looked and couldn’t find one).

Are the dunes mostly hard pack trails or is it paved ?

I ran the Ouderkerk a/d Amstel route only once, but cycled there a couple of times. This is a road where you’ll encounter a lot of cyclists and occasionally a car. Don’t expect to be able to run side by side here all the time, but you can run continuously. Using the train or subway you get close (Bijlmer station for instance) and from there you can either start running or get a bus. Or you can rent some bikes to get there. Let me know if you decide to run this route so I can ask a friend who lives in Ouderkerk what’s the best way to get there by public transport. This is a pretty straightforward run where you can use a map and don’t need a GPS device.

The dunes are roughly 70% paved and 30% easy trails. It never gets technical nor difficult. Yesterday I ran 25.4km and my Garmin measured 87 meters elevation gain. Here’s the website of the Waterleidingduinen: http://awd.waternet.nl/kaart/#!/filter/items-all/ For cycling I always use http://www.gpsies.com/#10_52.5_5.75_mapQuest, maybe there are running routes as well.

If you have a GPS device you may want to use the route I ran on January 1 (although I got lost a bit at the end, so ignore the loop) or the one I ran yesterday, see http://connect.garmin.com/activity/428752140. If you need more miles you can either run on the beach or over the boulevard to the North. The entrance to the dunes is 1 mile from Zandvoort station, see below. Officially you need a ticket to enter the Waterleidingduinen, but I’ve never been asked for this (and you can’t buy one at the entrance I show below). Be aware that only two trains per hour travel to and from Zandvoort. Let me know if you come to Zandvoort, if time allows I can guide you from the station to the entrance of the dunes.

This is the entrance (on the right, next to the garbage bin), although the gate is a bit larger now.

Nothing to add to the other recommendations as it’s been a while since I was there. But if you are confined to the city, you can take your mind off the boredom of a long run with some nice “window shopping” in certain areas!

Yes, nothing but trouble on that route

Oh my, brings back memories of running in Vondelpark around 1978. Running was nowhere mainstream then, so people looked at you funny, I do recall that this park had lots of clothing optional people hanging around, but of course, I was focused on my run.

Thanks for advice on routes. We successfully finished our 20 mile run this morning. We ran the banks of the Amstel river south from city center. What a fabulous run. Sure is nice to get a big change of scenery from hype usual routes.

A little jealous this morning! Looks like nice long run weather there, too! How for out did you end up going?

Ahhhhh…I did a run yesterday morning on the bike paths around Amsterdam airport…I forgot that they are mainly concrete too. However, running with 747’s landing right over your head is kind of cool and the bike path came right up to my hotel door. Would be better to be in the city, but I was just in transit on the way home!!!

It was perfect this morning. Cool with a light wind. We ended up going about 6 miles out of town before turning back. I don’t remember the name of the last little town. We didn’t have to dodge any 747 but we did have to go around a few ducks that are so used to people that they wouldn’t move.

Well I can say it was nice to run in Holland Tue-Wed-Thu in positive temperature and shorts on terrain with solid footing. I had a few good runs at a local track too that was 2K from my hotel in Eindhoven. Back in Canada to the minus 20 something deep freeze and slipping on snow and ice.
