Long Ride or Long Run, longest to recover from?

In reading Dan’s preperation for Ironman War training schedule, I noticed that he places the long run after the long ride. He states that athletes should be able to recover quicker because it is a shorter session? I have always thought the the run was much more “impactful” and therefore took longer to recover from. I am curious what coaches and athletes think about the two workouts and how they place them when approaching the taper. G

Given the choices, I’m going to pick Long Ride.

I am going to argue and say Long Ride. While the Long Ride may be hard to recover from the Long Ride is even harder. So be sure to do your Long Ride 2-3 days from the Long Ride.

Well played, my friend.

If never again, we can all say that in this particular instance the answer is clear.

I actually like to do mine as a brick session of a long ride followed immediately by the long ride. Really gets the legs ready as a race simulation.

I think recovery time is pretty close for both, at least thats been my experience.

I think what everyone is trying to say is that you probably meant to write long ride or herpes. Given those options…herpes by an inch.

Legs take two days or so after a hard 180k ride, I feel great the day after a 20-22 miler … actually the night of the same day. Long ride hands down.

By a long ride, do you mean like 100 kilometers or something shorter, like just 62 miles?

Brad

Something really hard, like a metric century.

you guys are obviously Americans - I got slapped on another post for trying to be funny, so stop and and go for the long ride or metric century…

I don’t know, the decision between LR or LR is important. To banish it to LR would be a disservice. Personally, I think this is the most important debate I’ve seen on ST in a while…

sorry, had to

Ya know, you probably could have just corrected the title after the first half dozen smart asses weighed in.

Just an observation.

LOL!

On a serious note, I was thinking about the same thing when I read Dan’s article. Personally, I feel fine after a 100 mile ride and like crap after a 18 mile run. And my recovery is a lot slower from the long run. My legs will be sore/tired for 3-4 days after a long run and only 1 day after a long ride. I think this falls into the category that everyone is different and what works one is different for another. I am definitely a cyclist first and a runner second (or third).

Depends on the distance of either, but for me, seems like a long RUN is harder to recover from (but I enjoy it more).

As for a not quite apples to apples race comparison, I recovered after 1 day from IMRI 70.3. It usually takes me all week to recover from a marathon. Like I said, this is obviously not an apples to apples comparison, but my feeling is that long running is harder (for me) to recover from than long riding.
