Long Beach to Bolsa Chica bike route - bike path (pic)

Does anyone know an easy way to get from the Long Beach bike path to the bolsa Chica one?

There’s no easy way. It all involves traffic, traffic signals, and stop signs. However, the simplist way is:

Ocean to Bayshore, left on Bayshore to 2nd, right on 2nd to PCH, right on PCH. At that point, I’d stay on PCH and forget about the bike trail. Or, if you take the trail, get off before you get to Huntington Beach.

I don’t ride in LB but I “think” it’s Ocean…2nd ST…PCH…Bolsa Chica bike path. A word of caution. I run on the bike path at Bolsa/Huntington SLOW DOWN! People are going to the beach and are not looking for bikes.

Thanks for the info, that’s what I needed. This Sat, I’m coming down from the resevoir in SG and I need to get to costa mesa. I’m very unfamiliar with the beach cities so what you provided will work great for me.

One more question, do you know an approximate distance or time it takes from the LB to Bolsa Chica bike path?

two paths border long beach. there is no easy route from the west path to bolsa chica. I would not bother trying to get from the west path to bolsa chica, it is all busy surface streets with no bike lanes. The east bike path (san gabriel river trail) has easier access to bolsa chica. you need to ride south through seal beach, either on pacific coast hwy, or through town, through sunset beach, again on pch or the parking lot road next to the beach. It runs right into the north end of bolsa chica.

fyi, i’m not sure if you’ve ever ridden the bike path thru bolsa chica, but don’t bother on the weekends if you’re looking for a workout. Too many joggers, walker, strollers, surfers, etc. If you need to go fast, stay on PCH, or ride the frontage road.

It’s a few miles from SG river trail to BC bike path. From Warner Ave(Jack in the box) to the HB pier is 5 miles, another 3 miles to SA river trail, 1 mi up the trail make RT up the hill at Victoria/Hamilton ST. to CM.

GOOD ADVICE!

One more thing, PCH from Golden West ST. to Beach BL. has lots of parked car and NO BIKE LANE be careful. It’s a no win thing between the bike path and PCH. Best advice is go early in the morning.

I think it’s about 5 miles. If you have any questions PM me I live in HB just off PCH.

Looking at LA bike paths and then mapquest, it looks like the SG trail crosses PCH. Is that correct?

(Just to make it clear, I’m coming from the Rio Hondo Trail, but I said the resevoir on the SG just because that’s more known. I can switch onto the SG trail and then head down to the ocean, as it seems that is an easier route to bolsa chica???).

Yes the SG trail crosses PCH. You can just ride south on PCH. When you get to Warner Ave (Jack in the Box) you can make a RT and get on the bike path. Note PCH has a bike lane from Warner to Golden west St. You can hammer on the bike if you stay on PCH. Be careful if you get on the bike path.

I don’t know about the Rio Hondo trail.

Thanks for the info. I’ll give you a report either way, successful or not.

Ok, I failed to make it this weekend so I will try next. I rode to the Rio hondo river trail where I usually jump on, but it was closed. They are doing construction on the trail and unfortunately, I don’t know the area well enough to find the next entrance. I tried to ride up parallel but that didn’t make sense after I thought about it, as I’d ride down and hit the stupid construction again. So, I rode down parallel but I kept hitting road dead ends (You know how all the roads around the bike path are dead ends…) After about 20 minutes of searching, I decided to bite the bullet and return home.

Just got a TT bike and live in Costa Mesa off of Victoria/Harbor…any tips on where to get some good long rides where I can stay in Aero position?

All I know over there is the Santa Anna River Trail. Here’s a link to the lower one. It leads up to the Upper one. You may want to wait for LongBoarder or another OC local to give you more info and details. I’m not from OC so I’d get you lost.
