Living in Auburn, CA?

I retire in just over 2 years. Looking for a place that is nice and quiet, but not far from civilization. I don’t care about triathlon training but I am looking for good hiking, trail running and mountain biking. Not looking for a job and have no kids. I don’t mind living in a shoe box as long as I can fit my camping gear, bikes etc. So, how is Auburn, CA? Too remote? Climate? Community? Cost of living?

You would love it - great town - great trails for hiking mountain biking, close to Sacramento and Tahoe and for California great cost of living.

Well, it is definitely on my list. I have never been there so I’ll have to make a trip and check it out. It seems so strange to think that I’ll be retired in 2 1/2 years or so and can live wherever I want. The choices are really overwhelming but I don’t have to settle down anywhere. I do not plan on buying a house so that I can move freely whenever I want. Auburn just looks like my kind of place. I also have my eye on Ft. Carson, CO and San Louis Obispo.

I have liked at Lake of the Pines, outside of AUburn, for 25 years. This area is HEAVEN!! Above the fog, below the snow, and close to so much.

If you want any more into, give me a call.

I’m from the Sacramento region and went to college down in San Luis Obispo (‘SLOw’ as it’s commonly referred).

Auburn - nestled in the foothills, but close enough to metropolitan areas, plenty of lakes and rivers nearby, lots of options of outdoor recreation, mild winters w/ occasional light snow, hot summers, low cost of living, community is mostly Caucasian and politically conservative.

SLO - along the coast, near the ocean, college town, no big cities nearby (San Fran is 3.5 hours north, LA is 3 hours south), lots of outdoor recreation, mild weather year-round, relatively low cost of living for a coastal area, community is mostly Causcasian and politically moderate/liberal.

I threaten my wife we are moving to Auburn all the time. Unfortunatly her mom lives too close (next town over) for me to actually do it.

Trails are fantastic in the area and get nothing but better as you get further East. Check out Nevada City too. A bit further out, but a lot closer to nature.

If you like to ride your MTB, Markleeville is very close to Nevada City.

Just be careful WHERE in Auburn you look to move. There are some rather shabby areas of old timers you will want to look to avoid (more trailers than homes). Also be careful, what looks like a great deal on the internet is most likely either right on HWY 80 (super busy main road to tahoe) or it’s 30 feet from the RR tack that winds pretty much all over town. The south side of town near the ravine is really nice.

The ravine and confluence is great.

It is a little hotter than Sac though due to something called the inversion layer or something like that.
Usually get a dusting of snow every year.

You might want to look into Grass Valley, Nevada City, and Colfax too.
Higher, cooler, cheaper, still less than a 15 minute drive to shopping in Auburn and 30 minutes to Roseville (1 hour from Grass Valley/Nevada City).
Added bonus, from all those cities except Colfax, getting to Yosemite is a 2 hour drive with 1 turn (CA-49 to 120 gets you into the park)

Man, I guess I am in trouble. At Lake of the Pines in Auburn, my parents live across the street, my mother in law 1 mile over, my youngest daughter with her husband and my oldest granddaughter around the corner.
My sister and husband across the lake. The positives of having family close far out weigh the negatives.

At 1500 feet, we get just enough snow like every 5 years to be fun. I can drive up the hill to Grass valley, Nevada city or Colfax where it can get pretty heavy just a few minutes up the hill.

Thanks. I’ll check back in a couple of years from now. It is still a bit early for me to make a decision. I am just dreaming. August of 2016 is when I plan to retire. Auburn area sounds like my kind of place. When it gets too hot in the summer (or cold in the winter), I can just load up the tent and do some camping along the coast.

Yes, thanks. I have been to SLO many times. It is a nice town with enough civilization for me.

Wow…very nice.

At 1500 feet, does not get too hot in the summer, compared to the valley. Tends to cool off more than the valley. Not as cold as going up the hill to grass valley.
We do get lots of rain, when it rains.

There was a reason they open the Grass Valley group where they did.

I got an early retirement so life is great.

Check this place out; Del Webb Sun City Lincoln Hills, CA (55+ Community). Was in area last Friday and had lunch at their resort. Super nice with fitness centers, hiking, biking, swimming… and 15miles from Auburn.

Lincoln though is in the valley proper which means slightly hotter summer temps than Auburn, but more importantly it means winter Tule fog.

I spent my college years in the Sacramento Valley. A common ride was to leave downtown Sac and ride around Folsom Lake. In winter when the Tule fog sets in between storm systems you can have days, if not weeks where it’s foggy every day. As it continues the fog will burn off later and later and you will find days where the high temperature in Sacramento will be in the low 40’s. And it’s a wet cold 40 degrees. Anyway, during the winter we’d head out on that ride in the damp cold and once we got up to about Auburn’s elevation it would be sunny and in the 60’s. It was wonderful. Until you realized that you were going to have to descend into that fog again.

It’s not that far from Lincoln or Penryn or Loomis to Auburn. But there are times in the year where the difference will seem like light years. Just FYI.

As I type this at 6:35pm weather.com says it’s 86 in Lincoln and 80 in Auburn.

Just make sure you understand the differences in climate you can encounter by moving short distances.

Enjoy your retirement.

Thanks for that insight. I’ll keep that in mind.

I am all about the 55 plus communities! However, I have a few years left to go (46)!
