Im a 15 year old male who is planning on doing some sprint traithlons. I was just wondering what sort of liquids I should carry for the bike leg. I was just thinking of a bottle of water and a bottle of gatorade. Any thoughts will be appreciated.
Unless it it’s 100+ degrees out or you’re miserably slow, you shouldn’t be out there long enough for hydration to be a serious limiter. I’ll usually take a little squirt/splash in the aid station they typically have coming out of T2 if my throat is feeling kinda dry, but otherwise don’t bother.
depends, where I live, the sprints are usually “reverse” sprints (run-bike-swim). For those, I dont worry because once off the bike, all there is to do is swim 400m. for the ones that are standard format (s-b-r) sometimes ill stick a gel flask full of water in my shorts, enough for a nice gulp of water before heading into a 5k run.
1 small bottle of water on bike frame, which I don’t usually drink entirely. Drinking on the bike is faster than drinking on the run, so if you need to drink, do it on the bike.

You don’t need anything. Just grab a cup of water on the start of the run and maybe suck down a gel at the very end of the bike to give you an extra little kick.
Personally I would ignore any advice to not have any hydration. I typically use just an aero bottle on the bike, and drink 1/2 to 2/3. On the run, I may or may not take anything, and then only a sip. Sure a Sprint is short enough to not require hydration and yet maintain performance, but for me, it comes down to want over need. I couldn’t imagine NOT having something. I participate in a weekly 8 mile TT and still use half an aero bottle. I tried going without once, and my mouth was so dry, my tongue felt twice its normal size. Take a bit to drink on the bike, and be comfortable. Why suffer? What’s the point in NOT having hydration?
You asked a simple question and I’ll give you a simple answer.
One bottle of Gatorade, water, or diluted Gatorade if you prefer that. You don’t NEED it, but you may WANT it, and it will not hurt to have it along. It is no more complicated than that. See how that works for you and make adjustments if needed for your next race. At 15, you don’t need to know everything there is to know about aero and hydration concerns, just being out there at such a young age is enough.
I couldn’t disagree more. Think about other sports. Do you think college basketball players don’t drink anything in the first half. Watch them at time outs or when they sub. Think about football players in the first quarter…do you think they don’t drink anything? Even being out there for one hour means you will be sweating and your body will want something to drink…yes…you might not be getting severely dehydrated…but you’re body/stomach will want something to soak up.
I put a bottle of gatorade down my aerodrink and take maybe two drinks of it on the bike.
Reasoning:
To get the lake taste out of my mouth
Psychological- Gatorade is fuel, fuel makes me go faster.
I will probably not even drink half or a third of it but it is nice to sip on as you walk your baby back to your car : )
It takes about 25 minutes for your body to fully absorb water or sports drink during a race, so for a sprint, anything taken much past 1/2 through the bike is going to have a pretty minimal effect unless it’s really hot in which case you get some cooling benefit. Half to 3/4 bottle of diluted gatorade should do the trick. I think you should defintely take some liquid during the event, but be careful about going overboard. Since the run should be done fast - not too far off your open 5K pace - then you want to be careful to avoid over-hydrating and having a lot of liquid sloshing in your stomach.

You realize it is a race…right? You’re supposed to suffer.
To answer the OP’s question…I don’t tend to take anything. If it’s hot I’ll take half a bottle or something like that. Just make sure it is aeor and easy to access. Whatever that means for your current setup.
Even for an hour race I think you need to take in some carbs. Thats why I race with a sports drink mixture. Especially on the longer distance “sprints” with 18-20 mile bikes and 4-5 mile runs, you need to get some fuel back in you. Also, if the swim is very cold, you will burn more energy than usual, and that needs to be replaced so you don’t bonk during the run. For two years I only raced with one aero bottle of water, but I’m trying something new this season to incorporate some carbs into my race diet. I’ve tried it in some continuous brick workouts and its been spectacular. I don’t get the usual feeling of being run-down in the last 1/3-1/4 of the workout.
So I would definitely have a think of sports drink, and then perhaps a chaser of water if you find you don’t like the feeling of that residue in your mouth.
