Lindsey Vonn to make a comeback

Wow - skiing 10 weeks post-knee replacement? My TKR surgeon would have a conniption. He didn’t even want me to run. When I showed him video of me ice skating, I thought he was going to faint.

Among other issues, she had not been able to straighten her right leg for nearly a decade, which led to problems with her hip, back and neck as well.

Yes - same. Good luck to her! I would be nervous to crash, though the first time I crashed on the mountain bike afterwards, it wasn’t too bad.

Lindsey Vonn Plans a World Cup Return as She Rejoins the U.S. Ski Team

Five years ago the American ski racer left the sport, but a new right knee has her aiming to compete this year on the World Cup circuit, and possibly, in the 2026 Olympics.

I wish her the best, but that’s a tall ask for a 40 YO to return after 5 years. The article says the average age is 26.

I’ve always been proud of her for the huge success she’s had. She’s the only American woman to win Olympic gold in downhill.

Good luck Lindsey!

For those who don’t follow alpine skiing much: Vonn’s comeback (if it succeeds) would only put her in limited competition with Mikaela Shiffrin. (The two of them are, by far, the most successful female alpine racers in US history). Vonn specializes in the speed events, Shiffrin specializes in the slower, more technical events. Shiffrin is not racing downhill this year. There could be some overlap in their events, but not a huge amount.

That seems less than smart. A second knee replacement is tough to do.

Yes - hard to do and going through that pain again? No thank you. My doc mentioned Bo Jackson and him wearing out his first hip, so “Don’t be like Bo.”
