Will Quarq’s Specialized’s s works carbon cranks power meter work with Lightning Carbon Cranks? I have emailed Lighting bikes but had no response.
I just came from my Specialized LBS looking at Quarq’s for my Transition with Specialized cranks. Aside from all the confusing BB types etc apparently Specialized cranks have a star pattern on the inside of the spider that matches to the crank arm. I guess this is what is unique to them so unless the Lightning cranks you speak of have this star pattern on the inside my guess is you’ll need a different Quarq.
The Lightning spider is the same shape as the Specialized. (At least that is what Lightning says on their site).
The thing that doesn’t make sense to me is the longer spindle on the Lightning vs the Specialized. It seems the chain line could be wonky at best.

No, you cannot use the Specialized Quarq with Lightning cranks. As another poster mentioned, the chain line will be off.

Now that you guys are part of SRAM you need to convince them to make shorter cranks… then there would be exactly 0 reason to use Lightning cranks. Their crank design is a complete PITA…
Mike,
Is it possible to use the the quarq cinqo saturn spider for the lightning carbon cranks with the specialized s-works carbon cranks? I’m currently using the cinqo saturn for the lightning and I’m considering to replace the crank.
What’s so bad about the Lightning design?

You need a special tool to connect the two crankarms together. It is an Allen wrench that is a few inches long to connect on the inside of the bottom bracket. To get the torque right twists the stupid allen wrench and it eventually breaks.

Thanks. That seems more like a defective tool than bad crankset design. Doesn’t the Specialized have the same issue? Campy, too? Seems like any hirst join would require a longer allen wrench.

I suppose.
It is hard to get the torque right and to not have the thing creak like a mofo.
Anyway SRAM is shipping shorter cranks now… all the way down to 162.2…

The Quarq spider for Lightning cranks will not work with the Specialized s-works carbon cranks. Although they are very similar, the two are not interchangeable.
