Light Bicycle disc wheel

Just noticed this, new from Light Bicycle. I’m a big fan of their wheels.

Light enough. 1270g(ish) in the build I tried.
WAY cheaper than the big brands.
21mm internal width for wider tires
Can customize hub, axle and driver body.
All disc wheels are within a couple watts of each other, so…

Looks awesome, I have a set of their 55mm wheels on my roadbike and love them. If I was in the market I’d serious consider this one

Very tempted by this. Was waiting to see what Hunt come up with in the new year, but I might get in contact with Light Bicycle and see if the email they sent about Black Friday discounts is still valid

Somehow heavy this disc?

From what I understand about LB is they run tight margins to maintain their price advantage and rarely discount their wheels.
If you missed the Black Friday sale you will probably be out of luck until next year.

Also, delivery times can be quite slow if shipped from Asia. I waited 4 months for my wheels! So… order now if you want wheels in the spring!

I am likely going to order an 88mm front clincher from them in the new year. Prices are great, reputation is good, build components on point. Apparently the overall cost is up with shipping rates high during holiday season. Their customer service thinks rates will decline in February making the total package a little more economical.

I saw from the shipping options there was a huge disparity between 1-2 weeks and February.

Wow, looks nice. I was looking at Prime and RON, but DT hubs and extra width do make this attractive.

Does anyone have experience ordering from LB to Germany? How much tax did you pay? The LB website says that these are not available through the EU warehouse.

Specs indeed look good on paper, though as discs have grown wider the potential for RD clearance issues has also increased. I’ve recently seen a couple wide discs that didn’t have sufficient clearance between the disc and the RD cage, as I was in the market recently for a disc/disc after I switched from a rim brake TT bike.

My prior rim brake Roval 321 had just enough clearance and so after experiencing difficulty with these two other discs, went back to the well for a Roval 321 disc/disc and sure enough, it too had just enough clearance - no issues but no margin to spare either. I would be a bit concerned with a newer, unproven wide disc wheel design because you might wait months for it to arrive, only to find out it doesn’t quite work, and then you either need to lock out the largest cog (maybe NBD if you live and race in FL) or you’ll need to send it back and wait months and months for a replacement that hopefully works.

Don’t get me wrong, if I was in the market for a disc wheel, this would be a very tempting option, but I’d be crossing my fingers the whole time, as I would with any other new wide disc wheel.

Unless the wheel you receive is the first to ever get mounted to a bike with the type of groupset you own, this just won’t happen
.

The shipping of my rims took about 8 weeks to Germany, but it was in the first lockdown, so I would assume that it might be a bit faster now.
I opted for the TPD shipping so I didn’t had to pay taxes.

I think I will order a disc wheel in the next weeks, maybe also with their Tri Spoke.

Got an update on this when they launched some weeks back, and really peaked my interest as I have two pairs of their wheels. A WR50 disc brake set and a R88 rim brakes set. very good wheels IMO.

Only qualm i have is that the valve hole is left open, and seem to rely on a sticker to seal it. i think its really a missed opportunity on their part. could have designed it with a proper valve cover to make it more seamless.

It might just be my n=1 “anecdata” experience, but I recently had clearance issues with two “boutique” disc wheels. Tried everything to get them to work, confirmed hanger alignment, tried spacers with Wheel #1, even swapped in a new from the box RD to confirm there wasn’t something funky with my RD, but they just wouldn’t work when shifting to the big cog. Ordered a Roval 321 and everything was in order - no issues. Wheel #1 was returned to the manufacturer. Wheel #2 was replaced by the manufacturer (yes I now have two disc/discs) and the replacement Wheel #2 works fine (at least according to my LBS, who installed it yesterday).

My hypothesis is that the larger manufacturers like Roval and DT Swiss are better able to deliver consistent product with consistent dimensions/clearance because they are making the same disc wheel over and over. The smaller boutique manufacturers, who offer different hubs or construction to address issues like rider weight or chainstay clearance, are more apt to produce a wheel that is slightly out of spec. Or maybe I just got two wheels from different boutique manufacturers that were out of spec and those are isolated instances that are not indicative of a larger issue specific to boutique manufacturers.

Light Bicycle is NOT a boutique manufacturer and I’m sure they’ve tested their wheels on a few bikes before they sell.

Derailleur clearance can be an issue on lenticular discs with small granny gears. I sold an old lenticular disc because I needed to run a 34 granny before my derailleur would clear.
A flat disc should not have issues.

I bought some 80mm wheels from Light Bicycle a few years back. Shipping took 4 weeks and they arrived damaged. Light Bicycle very reluctantly agreed to replace them, but I had to send them back, another 4 weeks. Then another 4 weeks waiting for the news one to arrive. They seemed OK, but I hit a stone on a training ride and it buckled the wheel. I’ve never buckled a wheel on a road or TT bike before. I took it to my LBS and they couldn’t do much with it, so I sold them for $150. They cost me $800. I then managed to get a near new Zipp 808 for AU $400 and a Zipp 900 for $700 (near new). That’s my experience. I think the quality with Light Bicycles and other Chinese companies is better now, just hope and pray you don’t have to do a warranty return. Also the resale is pretty bad. Any 2nd hand Chinese frames, wheels etc are almost unsellable in Australia.

Looks great to me! I have 4 LB wheels and they are great! A set of 55 mm built on DTS 240 exp, a 3 spoke and a 88 mm Rim laced to a Shimano track hub. So far I haven’t had a single issue with them, other than the 88 being a touch wide for my track bike and has picked up a red line around the rim as a result from a few sprints.

Anyone have the profile of it? The small profile on the site seems to be mostly a placeholder of sort - doesn’t fit if there should be room for a cassette on one of the sides.

88mm or Tri-spoke, in your opinion which is faster on a TT setup ?

Curious if anyone took delivery and can post some pictures?

Same. Thinking of pulling the trigger.
