Lifetime Fitness Tri (1M purse?)

I subscribe to the sports business journal, and just came across this. I don’t remember a lot of discussion on the board about it

Health and fitness club chain Life Time Fitness is linking the biggest events in Triathlon, looking to build the sport by joining America’s four largest competitions into the Life Time Fitness Series. A July event in N.Y., an August competition in Chicago, an L.A. triathlon in September and a Minneapolis event planned for next July are included in the series. Life Time will attempt to build interest in the sport by offering a combined purse of $1.05M – including a $400,000 series championship bonus.

Life Time Fitness Founder & CEO Bahram Akradi said there is an initial five-year commitment to the series. He would not reveal pricing on series sponsorships but said there have been some formative conversations with potential sponsors

does this mean the NYC tri elite race is going to be none drafting and back on the same course as the Age groupers?

I hope so…

I figures something like this was going to come together at some point, i think it will be really go for the sport and hopefully increase the olympic distance status some. that is one large amount of cash to win for a series race, anyone know what the pay out is for kona?

Kona pay-out is minimum wage compared to this…although my guess is that a Kona winner would break about even with their endorsements.

It’s amazing, given the schedule, that a person could concentrate on other races (even World Cup) and still win the series.

Should be interesting how the pros react…

then that should get a lot more top names out there to consider doing some of the intermediate distance races like this, the pro field last year was extremely impressive to watch at LTF-Minneapolis race I can not wait to see who shows up this year and in the future. could make for some extremely exciting head to head competition between some huge name pros!

(a) A professional male and/or female triathlete (or both) who winseach of the four Life Time Fitness Triathlon Series events in a givenSeries year will win the Series bonus of $200,000.

Does this mean that a male and/or female will only win this if they win EVERY race or does this go to a points leader of the entire series for each gender? It looks like someone would have to run the table. That sounds pretty hard.

I think this is great though. Similar to the marathon series that is linking the major marathons to increase top competition in each. Between this and the ITU in Des Moines, there is some serious attention/money being given to triathlon.

Sam

so the races will take place over the course of a year? june, august, september (all 2006), then july 2007? weird

and don’t forget the Pro Am race in Tempe, AZ next Spring which will combine a PRO with and Amateur for a prize purse of between 750k and 1,000,000. The sport is finally on the verge of becoming professional for those who put their bodies on the line week after week, all year-round.

You just gotta love the way Bahram does things…

Yeah, just dont let him see you “speeding” through a parking lot…

hahaha Paul…I was just about to post that.

One weird thing abut the series…next July is New York going to change their traditional race weekend? They’ve been on the same weekend as Lifetime in the past and they are again this year. I doubt Lifetime would change due their Aquatennial association.

The way I read that was you had to be first male or female at all 4 races. That’d be really tough to pull off, but in a non drafting event I think that’s more likely than a draft legal one…

This sounds like great news for the sport, and injects some money into the pro prize purse. Perhaps the WTC will take notice.
