Connecticut AG Blumenthal, running for Dodd’s open Senate seat, repeatedly claimed to have served in Vietnam, yet it appears he got multiple deferments and eventually joined the Marine Reserves when his last possible deferment ran out, serving with a unit in…DC.
Definitely Presidential material for the Republicans.
That’s right … in order to be Democrat presidential material you need to “loathe the military” and never serve in any respect.
You mean like John Kerry (Vietnam), Al Gore (Vietnam), Mike Dukakis (Korea), Walter Mondale (Korea), Jimmy Carter (WWII), George McGovern (WWII), Lyndon Johnson (WWII), John F. Kennedy (WWII), you mean like those guys?

Nope. Like Bill Clinton. Oh, and while he has never stated that he loathed the military, Barack Obama.

Wait a minute, you stated that in order to be Democratic material for President you had to loathe the military and never have served. 8 out of the last 10 Democratic nominees have served their country in combat. They *are *the military and its pretty clear that if anyone around here despises the military, its you.
I don’t understand this. It’s 2010. It should be relatively simple for a candidate today to truthfully explain what he or she did during the Vietnam era. If you avoided the military for principled or selfish reasons, own up to it. Say, I got my deferrment because . . . and (a) I stand behind that decision because . . . or (b) I regret it because . . …
Absent some Jane Fondaesque error of judgment, I have a hard time believing that a significant portion of the population really cares. And those that do are unlikely to vote for your regardless.
I could still vote for someone who dodged the draft 35 years ago because he was, at the time, a 20-year-old weasel. I’m unlikely to vote for someone who currently mischaracterizes his involvement because he thinks it’s politically necessary. (“Unlikely” because his opponent could still be worse.)
The last two democrats that the party managed to elect never served. One of them (the only two term democrat that anyone under the age of 60 can remember actually loathed the military.

Now this would be laughable if it were not so ignorant.

This has more to do with the makeup of the military post-Vietnam or Cold War and changing demographics than anything Democrat/Republican. Republicans had to nominate a dinosaur in order to get a veteran in the last election.
Clinton loathed the military? CFR (and please make it something from the last 20, even 30 years).
And the GOPs greatest hero, Ronald Reagan, didn’t serve and instead played a soldier in the movies during WWII, and another guy they elected twice to the White House, George W. Bush, fenagled his way in to an air guard unit to defend Texas during Vietnam, and even then couln’t be bothered to show up when called upon. His VP was and remains the world’s greatest ever war profiteer, unless of course you include Prescott Bush. So please quit trying to claim some sort of high ground here. You look like an idiot.
The party you insist on defending has a disgusting track record of attacking the service records of men who served this country bravely and honorably. You are upholding the tradition admirably.

And dismantled and had no idea how to use them. This has come from people in his inner circle.
If you are implying that all the names you listed actually served in combat…then you don’t know your history very well.
Please clarify who on this list you think actually served in combat. Because, off the bat, I see that four that didn’t.
And, for you to imply that they served in the particular wars is totally misleading. In one case, the guy was in the country two years…after the fighting had stopped. And, two others never left the US.
Do you need help with researching facts before you post??

And is still the only divorced President. And fathered a child conceived out of wedlock (Patti Davis, born October 1952 to Nancy (Davis) Reagan, married March 1952). But I digress.
