Let's bring back the 15 hour time limit on Ironman

I know this has been gone over but…

Back in the day, we had a 15 hour time limit for an Ironman and according to Wikipedia, “Anyone completing one of these races within the time limit, so long as it is the prescribed distance, is entitled to call themselves an Ironman (the term being gender-neutral). At one time there was a 15 hour time limit.”

I would offer to suggest we make the cut off one better - 14:30 hours.

Swim cut off could be 2 hours
Bike cut off could be 7 hours (16 mph average)
Run cut off could be 5.5 hours (almost 13 min mile)

Transition would be counted as part of the one of the events in resepect to time.

Exceptions to the cut off rule would be over the age of 75 years of age or physically or mentally handicapped individuals.

Ironman already fills up within minutes so they would not miss any funding. Plus, it would be less expensive not to have the race director, police, ambulances, and medical personel there longer. That’s 2.5 hours of salary to these individuals and to the City which Ironman could save and still make all the revenues it enjoys now. Thus, cost cutting could be reflected in a discount to the participants.

Screw you and your 14:30, that’s for pussies. If you can’t make it in 12 hours, you are a complete loser

I would be okay with that but I want to be fair to others not as well off as myself.

Seriously? Get over yourself. lets knock it down to 10 hours. Anyone over that does not deserve acknowledgement for all the work they did leading up to the day…

I think I read that one of the guys who came up with the idea for the first IM didn’t finish within 17 hours. Did I imagine that? Too lazy to google.

ETA: And screw 10 hours. Anyone who does not win should be shot.

Cool story, bro.

The prices keep going up and the slots are filled within minutes.

This is a way to get the price down and open up more slots. Logically, it makes sense.

How about you just doing epic stuff like Norseman and other Ironstud stuff and leave Ironman races for us wusses to enjoy?

or for every course: double course record time and subtract 1 hour

Why do you hate America?

Logically, it makes sense.

No, it doesn’t.

Cheers, Chris

I just think maybe if you finish over 14:30 hours, unless you are elderly or handicapped, you are not really an Ironman. More like a Aluminumman or something.

Plus, the volunteers and the RD should get to go home before midnight for cryin out loud, they have families and such.9:30PM should be shut down point. Close it up and go home.

This exception makes it rather pointless to make a 15 hour limit. If you are hanging out waiting for the old folks for another two hours, you’re there anyway so nothing is gained. Might as well let everyone go longer.

Having said that, I think every RD can make up their own rules on time limits. I suppose if you want to direct an “Ironman” you follow WTC’s rules. But anyone can try to start up a race and then can shorten or lengthen cutoffs as they wish.

yup

the winner cross the line, all other will be DNF… or shot. Let’s make things exciting!

Why do you hate America?

I don’t hate America, I think we get taxed too much and work too much but that’s not my point. We are a nation of fatties, that is a fact. In triathlons alone we stink at the world level. GB, AUS and NZ have extreme talent in triathlons and less than half our popluation.

I have been doing ironman since 1982 and never had a 15 hour limit. Get over yourself.

Your right lets tell the old folk and handicaps you need to start earlier in the morning, maybe 5AM. They should be okay without support for 2 hours.

We are a nation of fatties, that is a fact.

Yes, so making these events LESS accessable to the masses, is a way to combat that?

Oh, and I’m sure all the RD’s at WTC, REV3, Challenge, HITS, etc - are ALL clamoring for new ways to reduce their field sizes, and their registration fees, all at the same time.

Yes they did, it said so in Wikipeda. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ironman_Triathlon

Australia has a lot of fat people, FWIW.
I agree we are a nation of fatties though.
