Letesenbet Gidey 62:52 Half Marathon World Record!

In Valencia this morning.

This is more than 1min off the old WR.

She is also the 5000m/10000m WR holder.

I would argue that this HM time “catches up” to the 5000m/10000m times, but letsrun seems to be in a tizzy, with many saying that 62:52 is way superior to the other times.

Discus.

According to the IAAF charts this is the highest scoring performance of anyone ever, male or female, any distance.

It converts to a 28:31 10k / 13:42 5k / 2:11:32 Marathon.

I have always had some problems with those charts.

But…

If we take the M WR, and divide by the W WR, we get the following:

5000m - 89.2%
10000m - 90.2%
Half Marathon - 91.5%
Marathon - 90.7%

So, upon further reflection, I do agree with the letsrunners and jaelinfunk: This HM run by Gidey is superior to the other WRs.

One of the greatest running performances of all time. She ran 14:45 for the 2nd 5k. She would have been about 30th in the men’s race which had a very deep field. And she is only 23!
