Leon's triathlon

Did anyone participate in the Leon’s Triathlons Held in NW Indiana in the 80’s & 90’s?

sure did and the wate was about 5 degrees!!

I did that race in 1995 and it was very memorable because it was during a heat wave. Wetsuits were still permitted (despite the water being really warm), so even the swim was hot! It was one of the first races I flew to (I was about 17 at the time), and I remember it well. What ever happened to that race?

What ever happed to Gary Newkirk? He was a very good writer for Triathlete. Z

I did it in the mid-80s with Bob Curtis, with the swim in the freeway lake that Lew Kidder talked about in the other Leon’s thread. I didn’t get a chance to respond to Lew, but I remember the race setting well. It was a fun race even before it hit the freeway!!

Yep, '88 or 89—leading the bike at about mile 18 & then 2 flats b/c I was an idiot & forgot to put in a good rim strip. ESPN filmed the race that year—great race & a cool feeling with helicopter + multiple camera crew etc. Still have the video, including me throwing my bike in disgust at the second flat. Comedy.

I did, on at least two occasions. Leon was a great personality.

I did it a couple of times in the mid-90s. It was great, even though the kept on finding “odd” things in Wolf Lake (dead bodies, for example).
