Leon Marchand Olympic Lineup: 400IM gold /200IM Gold / 200breast gold / 200fly gold

Leon Marchand had the 4:02.50 400IM world record last year and that event’s finals is up this Sunday at the Paris Olympics.

Here is an article from the Olympics website:

https://olympics.com/...view-pressure-medals

I did not realize that France has no gold medals in 12 years (I guess London 4x100 free ‘revenge’ gold was last one?)

Here is video to his 400IM world record (almost exactly a year to the day in Fuokoka):

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Kn4gblonhVc

He also has the 200IM, 200 fly, 200 breast. What a tough line up!

Marchand races 400IM prelims at 5:15 am EDT and then M400IM at at 14:30 EDT.

I don’t think I will wake up for heats so he better not get DQ’d !!!

I did not realize that France has no gold medals in 12 years (I guess London 4x100 free ‘revenge’ gold was last one?)

Last Individual gold was probably Camille Muffat when she beat Allison Schmitt in the 400 free in London. She sadly died in a helicopter collision in 2015.

The pool looks to be around 2s slow over 400m based on world record times and gold medals,

Leon’s 4:02.50 WR I guess will be hard for him to get to but it is a year further on from his record and I read his back stroke is faster

Actually, just a technicality but that was the prelims this morning, not the semis, as they only have prelims and finals for events of 400m and up. Of more note, three guys tied for 6th at 4:11.52 which is moderately amazing. So it took that time to make the finals and Kalisz of the U.S., 4th fastest in history, did not make it as he went 4:13 vs his PB of 4:05.90. He was training with Bowman and Marchand for the past year or so and “swimming more yards than ever”, but apparently he just could not put it all together today. A bummer for him…

ya some shit swims from a couple US guys, missing the final of that 400IM and Guliano missing the top 16 in the 200 free. That is the biggest shocker, dude was supposed to be the next Biondi and he can’t make a semi final?? Something off with our team, a lot of tapers just not there this time around. Hopefully they can freshen up with this 9 day meet later on…

And once again, the shit pool is disappointing everyone once they hit the wall and look up, really is too bad as many were ready to break WR’s for sure…Leon looks great, did a 100 swim down and still went 4;08, but expect this pool will let him have a go at his WR…His prelim time will probably win silver tonight…

I first looked at the cbc.ca website to see who made the finals and saw Kalisz name missing. As there are too many sports and personalities for me to track I was wondering what his lead up was (so thanks for sharing that). From the side I am cheering for Daiya Seto to have a good finals. Leon for me is a foregone conclusion but this pool is going to put a damper on how fast a performance we will see from these top people.

Do you all think this pool is around 0.5-0.75s slow per 100m ? What’s the estimate based on the swims all of you have seen.

For my personal viewing this is the big one that I have interest in and the other one is Kipchoge vs Bekele in the men’s marathon (I am going to be in Paris for that one). Summer’s 400IM is probably my next most interesting event. We also have Adam Peaty’s 100 breast final today (I’ll go talk about that in the Olympics swimming thread)

That was insane. Looked like Seto overcooked the fly as Marchand took it out at world record pace.

Matsushita was 5 seconds back at 200 and only 6 back at 400m for that silver and the kid is 18

Another gold for Coach Bowman! Marchand looked like he was even on WR pace for the longest time, but on our coverage they said the line was screwed up

on Kalisz, this is what wikipedia says in addition to his PB listed above. What a shame a guy with that consistency track record with 19x sub 4:10 not making the finals

Chase Kalisz also swam 4:06.75 (2016), 4:06.99 (2017), 4:07.47 (2022), 4:07.95 (2018), 4:08.12 (2016), 4:08.22 (2023), 4:08.25 (2018), 4:08.92 (2018), 4:09.09 (2021), 4:09.22 (2013), 4:09.39 (2024), 4:09.42 (2021), 4:09.43 (2017), 4:09.54 (2016), 4:09.62 (2014), 4:09.65 (2021), 4:09.67 (2017), 4:09.79 (2017), 4:10.05 (2015), 4:10.09 (2022).

I wonder if Chase is just a bit overtrained. He was out there at ASU for a year or more trying to keep up with Marchand every day, and Bowman was loading him down with more yards/meters than he had ever swum before, so perhaps he just got overloaded. It happens even to the very best.

Changing to the 100 fly, our local Tennessee favorite Gretchen Walsh and 100 fly WR holder got touched out for the gold by 0.04 sec by Torri Huske. Acc to Swimswam, Huske missed the podium at Tokyo by 0.01 sec; she was 3rd at the turn tonight but I’ll bet she was just killing it that last 50, saying “NO effing way am I missing by 0.01 again!!!” I thought that was a pretty cool story.

Muffat was a beautiful swimmer. Long silky stroke. Her group, trained by Fabrice Pellerin, with Yannick Agnel also, were some of the best swimmers at that games.

A favourite swimmer for me is Mollie O at these games - she is one of the shortest girls in the field but has an enormous long and silky stroke for her size. She reminds me of Thorpe the way she swims and has a lot more weapons than Titmus.

Can’t be easy swimming with Titmus in the same squad (Mollie and Titmus and Shayna Jack, among others, all train under Dean Boxall). These Olympics will be interesting to see what Mollie O decides to do after, including if she goes to swim with another group.

If I am reading this correctly Marchand swims 4x 30 July…that’s a heavy day and although he will cruise its still 800m of the two ultra tough events!
When does Léon Marchand compete at the Paris 2024 Olympics?
Léon Marchand will first compete in the 200m Butterfly; the schedule for the preliminaries and semifinals is:
Preliminaries: 5:00 AM ETSemifinals: 2:42 PM ET
He will also compete in the 200m Breaststroke; the schedule is:
Preliminaries: 6:45 AM ETSemifinals: 3:47 PM ET

Just watched the 200 fly semis and Kharun was closing on Marchand in the final 20m. Kharun closed from a body length back to an arm back. Probably Leon was saving energy for the 200 breast

Gold number two then three. Pretty cool how Marchand made the pass of Milak in the final stretch and solid race by Kharun…then Marchand gets in the blocks in the same session and gets gold in the 200 breast.

Insane double gold day so now he is at three with 200IM to go !!!

I was surprised that he beat Milak in the 200 fly since Milak is the WR holder. I figured he’d win the 200 breast mostly b/c I think that breast is his best stroke, albeit not by much as he is great in all 4!!! As monty said, it would’ve been cool to see him swim on 4 x 200 relay, since he had the fastest ever 200 yd free split at the NCAAs. Would have been interesting how his split compared to the best 200 free guys.

That was an awesome race to watch. Totally Olympian in stature.
Milak came out on the deck, cock of the walk practically saying “ya, ya, I’m bad” and busting out for the first 50-100m.
Meanwhile, Marchand stabilized the gap and ramped like a champ in the final 25-30m. All the while, I had my CDN heart in my throat looking at the 19yr old Kharoun keeping up to break the CDN national record and besting his PR for third place.
Man, I love stuff like this.

It looked to me like Milak was breathing way less than Marchand for the first 150m and at the end Milak was not swimming as flat as Marchand who kept his form. Ilya was awesome. I was stuck in a traffic jam when it was going on, so when I got to my destination quickly scanned the video in the parking lot, but it was awesome to see both gold medals on replay. What a day at the pool in Paris.

Has anyone to date won the 400IM, 200 fly AND 200 breast. Seems like we always get a different 200 breast champion than the fly-IM guys.

Leon just cruising in the 200 IM heats. In another day, your question will include the 200 IM. That’s a tough question to answer as I think consid time would be needed to research this.

I think this guy sweeps these 4 events. 400IM + 200IM + 200 fly minimally Phelps has done (I believe Spitz too, but no one else?). So if you add the 200 breast, it feels like it never has been done.
