Ok geez this could be a real bummer. I have tried this on multiple bikes and it’s happening on both so I don’t feel it’s a bike problem. From time to time I was getting a skip or jump of my chain and now it’s becoming more and more prevalent…maybe 5 times in a 90 minute ride last night. Not like you get with a poorly adjusted RD…it is staying on the same cog, but it will skip. Cassette has been checked and re-checked. And yes I even put a different cassette on and it still skips. I’m beginning to think I have a bad hub or something inside the body of the Rev. What am I overlooking here? I would really like this to be something I’m doing wrong and not a product performance issue:/
It is normally just that the spacing of the “hub” of the revolution isn’t the same as the spacing on your rear wheel. Sometimes you just have to fiddle with the rear mech’s barrel adjuster a little bit. Maybe only a quarter or half turn in either direction?

No this is not due to a maladjusted RD. I have a barrel adjuster on my down tube that I tweak every time I set it up as it’s always off by maybe 1/2 turn to get it perfect. The derailleur is dead nuts perfectly adjusted. I’m not the garden variety STer who can’t work on their bike;)
Hmmmm… can’t think of much else it could be. Have you checked the links in your chain to see if there is one that is slightly stiffer than the other? All I’m thinking is that it could be that when the frame is loaded it is flexing slightly and maybe going a tiny bit out of alignment. That PLUS a stiff link could cause something like you’re describing. I doubt it’s that but that’s all I can think of. Have you contacted Lemond? They used to have pretty good customer service if I remember correctly.
I have tried both my road bikes, same problem on both and my chains are sized perfectly, no bad links. I’m going to call LeMond today as they were closed when I got done last night. Figured one of the ST engineer brainiacs might have a ‘do this and this’ quick fix. There are some smart fellers on here…me not being one of them!
No it’s during harder efforts. When you say check the freehub…discuss please. I have yet to take it apart as I have not talked to LeMond yet and I don’t want to do anything that may void my warranty support My LBS is an hour drive from here so am in a holding pattern of sorts…but please feel free to expound in the meantime.
Just a thought- How old is your chain? Have you checked it for stretch? If you put an old chain with a new casssette it will skip as you have suggested.

Bike 2 is a 2 week old Trek 2.1 with about 300 miles. Bike 2 has ~ 1,000 miles on the chain/cassette so with that known I haven’t bothered to put my chain checker on them. I’m about 99.9% sure this isn’t a drive train problem. I have tested 2 bikes with their own cassettes/chains, plus a brand new Red cassette from a race wheel all with the same result:( Thanks though keep the ideas coming. I think I have alleviated all the obvious, but since I didn’t work weekends at NASA won’t pretend I might have missed something!
“The likely scenario is that your chain is worn out. It mates fine with the worn out cassette on your bike but not with the new cassette on the LeMond.”

Ideas?
Can you better describe the “skip”? Is it the chain itself, or does the freehub not “catch” internally?
Are you sure you have the skewer tight enough? I noticed once when my son had put his bike onto the LeMond that he hadn’t tightened the skewer adequately (it was closed, just not REALLY firmly) and the bike was moving around a lot on the “pylon”…maybe that’s what’s happening to you under higher loads?
Just a bunch of thoughts since with the newness of the bikes/chains/cassettes you describe it doesn’t sound like it would be a chain or cassette wear problem…

My bad very poorly described and choice of words. The chain never moves, but it’s tantamount to the feeling and sound you get with a poorly adjusted RD and a chain that ‘can’t make up it’s mind’ where it wants to be. I was looking down at the cluster during one of my maximal efforts and it never moved off the cog, but I still had 2 loud ‘click’ ‘click’ sounds and there was a definite feeling in my crank/bb that I had momentarily lost contact with my drive train…this is where ‘slip’ entered my description. This happened on the Soloist as well under harder efforts. Just double checked my skewer and she’s tight and secure. Just a real head scratcher here.
BioMcGeek: Look up a couple of posts and you will see my equipment rundown: oldest piece of drive train on my LeMond is a 1,000 mile chain/cassette, 2 week old Trek with new chain/cassette and a brand new Red cassette off a race wheel. No old LeMond cassette is in the loop.
I love the snot out of my Rev and no way is this going to keep me off it, but hoping it’s a ‘dummy fix’ of something I’m doing/not doing properly and not a warranty issue where I have to send it back. I will be lost and adrift w/o her!!!
I’ve had some problems with the cassette adapter skipping internally – the spring that activates the pawls does not seem very robust and the overall design seems more finicky than other freehubs. I pulled off the cassette adapter, cleaned out the grease and used a lighter grease or Tri Flow and it seems to be working fine.

OK…sounds like the freehub pawls might be “sticking”. If you can disassemble the freehub, try wiping out any grease and then using some light oil (3 in 1, ProLink, etc.) in there instead.
Tom I’m shocked to hear you say 3 in 1 that is redneck engineering lube!!! I love that stuff, but I never figured it would find it’s way on to my bike. No grease…just some good 'ol 3 in 1?

Did you completely remove all the factory lubricant?
Also, any tweaking to the ring that holds the pawls down?

Yup. I work for LeMond Fitness.
Fred no problem, it’s mechanical so things are bound to flare up now and again. Talked to Ben a bit ago and he brought me up to speed. Took us about 30 seconds to detail the problem and find the right course of action. In short, gonna nuke the factory grease and re-lube the pawls. Thanks for your response though.
My biggest concern was potentially voiding my warranty by doing the hub work myself so wanted to make sure I was good to go to service the freehub at home. Glad b/c it saves me about 2 hours in the car round trip!
