I am a recent law school grad and hopefully, soon to be certified to practice law in the state of RI. I am curious what positions a lawyer may find in the endurance sports / triathlon community. I am assuming there is a lot of IP work surrounding products marketing but what else is out there?
If you find any let me know. I’m a texas attorney and haven’t spent much time on this topic but would love to find a way to mix it. The closest i’ve come so far is 1)to start my own firm so that I can train when I want and 2) to be general counsel for my buddy’s that opened a bike shop.

Well after 25 years racing triathlons and 15 practicing law I’ve handled 2 cases for penniless pros needing pro bono legal representation to collect their prize money/enforce contracts with ‘sponsors’ who decided not to pay and race directors who promised to reimburse travel fees but didn’t; a couple of car v. bike accidents (triathletes are horrible PI clients - they underplay their injuries to doctors, overplay them to everybody else, and can’t understand why juries aren’t sympathetic that but for their injuries they might have run a 10 hour IM instead of and 11 hour IM.); I know of a framebuilder who needs to prosecute a patent infringment case - (framebuilder=no money).
In sum, the best “positions a lawyer may find in the triathlon community” are the aero-position and as a participant. Make your hobby your job and you won’t like either.
A lot of agents are former lawyers - you could be a pro-cyclist pimp?

That’s pretty much it, unless you can get a job as a corporate in-house counsel for one of the companies.

What is your passion for area of practice?
I’m in my 41st year as a triathlete and 37 years as a lawyer. I have represented many pros, amateurs, and and tri-related business. in a variety of issues. There are several parts to doing this including relationships forged over many many years, demonstrated competence and reputation, and being fully endemic in the tri-community. There is not an easy way . . . it is doing a little over an extended period of time - kind of like training and racing.
Saw this is an old thread, but thought I’d reply anyway. I’m actually looking for a patent attorney - preferably a triathlete - since I have several ideas for training equipment that I think could be marketable. Mostly swimming related. I am a pro triathlete located in greater Boston. If you have experience in patent law, or know someone who does, DM me and we can discuss further.
