Legacy experts, How can I catch 2028 Kona legacy?

There is my race since 2016, is it possible to catch 2028 Kona? If so what race do I need to enter in 2027?

I am planning on 2 races this year, if 2028 legacy is out off the picture, I might just race 1.

Thank you

Was Vineman an Ironman brand event?

yes it was.

Yes. In 2016 there was an “Ironman Vineman”, an official Ironman branded event run on the Vineman course after the Russ Pugh, the long time owner promoter of the Vineman races sold the race to Ironman. In 2017, Ironman moved the race to Santa Rosa. I did Ironman Vineman in 2016, and Ironman Santa Rosa in 2017 and both of those races counted toward Legacy eligibility.

The heart of the question is how do they count 12 years…is 2016 to 2027 12 years? If that is the case, can I finish an early race and apply for 2028 Kona ?

According to the Legacy program on their website, if your first Ironman branded 70.3 or 140.6 finish is 2016 the earliest you can apply is 2028. See last bullet bolded:

Oh I can’t do math… so sorry, you can apply in 2027:

Year of 1st IRONMAN Branded 70.3 or full-distance 140.6
When Eligible to Apply for the IRONMAN Legacy Program*
2013 End of 2024
2014 End of 2025
2015 End of 2026
2016 End of 2027
2017 End of 2028
2018 End of 2029
2019 End of 2030
2020 End of 2031

table taken from the link I originally posted

I read this as I can apply at the beginning of 2028(ie end of 2027)
.

As I remember it the list for Legacy qualifiers was getting very long, Now that it’s only every other year, you might have to wait a bit even after you’ve hit your twelve and apply. I reached my 12 in 2018. In 2019 I was waitlisted. Got in for 2020. Then that whole pandemic thing. I didn’t race until 2022.

2028 is out of the picture.

Assuming you race a full in 2027; you would apply in the Fall of 2027. IM will then let you know in Q1 of 2028 when your race date is.

Pre pandemic (2019) there was a 3-4 year waitlist. Now that the event is in HI, and IM has (not sure if they will keep doing) given athletes the choice to defer, I think it is safe to assume the waitlist is still just as long.

2030 could be the earliest.

You never know. People might have raced St. George or Nice and decided that 1 World Championship race was enough and therefore the wait list has shortened. They may have also cleared out a bunch of people for this and last year for the gender specific races. The new qualifications make it a little harder to qualify this way i think. It doesn’t really pay to do a bunch in one year like it used to.

So i’m saying there’s a chance (for 2028)
