Leg cramp whole leg. I can barely walk!? What the heck is going on?

I woke up last night to go the bathroom and my whole leg had a cramp. It was so painful and lasted a good 10 mins. I woke up in the Am and no problems but after moving around some it happened again. Every time I get up and walk it cramps. It’s coming from hamstring all the way down to my calf. It hurts like a mother every time I walk and whole leg feels achy and leg feels super weak. It goes away once I’m not walking around but still feels cranky/achy. I didn’t do anything unusual days leading up. Any thoughts? Suggestions?

I am sure some one else will chime in to say "go to the doctor: It could always be something like a pinched nerve and you are setting it off in certain positions, motions etc. It could be more serious too.

You are likely experiencing pain coming from your lower back with occasional nerve root impingement. You could go see a doctor but don’t bother with X-rays, MRIs or any medications beyond NSAIDs as there it not research to support it given the history you reported. You could get a physical therapy referral as well and that will likely help. The natural history of lower back pain is that it will resolve on its own in a couple days to weeks as long as you stay active and avoid doing things that will worsen your condition. So if walking/riding or swimming don’t bother it, then go for it. Avoid sitting for any extended periods, limit your bending. If it gets worse or doesn’t resolve… consult a physician. Look up the centralization phenomenon and that is what you should expect as healing occurs.

The more I read up on it the more I realize this is something to do with nerves then cramps. Just very strange it came on so quickly. The only thing I can think of is I fell on ice 4 weeks ago and was hurt pretty bad in my sacral region. I was better in a week and back to running. Also, I had some knee tenderness this Monday that has been linger so something is off.

I had a similar issue recently but mine was from a minor bike crash. I didn’t have any pain at first, two weeks later I could barely walk. It’s a herniated disc and the herniation is pressing up against the sciatic nerve cause serve numbness in my leg and foot. Physical therapy has been a huge help. Deal with it professionally before it gets worse.

I have to echo what others said and go see a doctor, but not just a general practioner (no offense to them, my father was one, but this is a specialized question). Well, maybe call your doctor and get a bunch of blood tests including minerals like phosphorous, magnesium, etc. as that is what affects neurons. Then with that data go see a nutritional specialist. They will need data on what is in your body to know what is going on and it isn’t worth visiting them without info from blood tests that they can use.

Interesting to note that today has been a lot better. I even was able to bike a little. However, I went for a walk with my wife and hamstring and calf cramped up again. Not as bad as yesterday but still enough that I couldn’t walk well. My knee is definitely aggravated so I’m wondering if this is a defense mechanism of some sort and my body is telling me to knock it off.

Most symptoms are a defense mechanism to get you to stop doing whatever you are doing wrong. 99% of the time, every time.

Just don’t amputate. #CantGoBack
