Leaving bike overnight at Ironman race?

Doing Syracuse 70.3 in a couple of weeks, and while there are always more expensive bikes out there, this will be the first race I’ve left my bike in transition the night before (required by race rules). I have to assume someone is in charge of watching the bikes all night long before the race? I’d hate to lose sleep the night before the race worrying about whether my bike will still be there in the morning.

Don’t worry; it’ll be there waiting for you in the morning.

Always hard leaving your baby with the sitter the first time but thousands upon thousands of us do it every year. You’ll be fine

Just make sure your bike is near a more expensive looking one
.

fart on the seat before you rack it
.

Lock it up.

Lock it up.

If you are that worried a thin cheap lock with a combination will do. If an organised gang were to try to steal some bikes (it has happened) one little lock will be too much with 1500 unlocked bikes.
The combination is in case you forget the key.
Don’t ask me how I know this.

Lock it up.

Don’t forget to unlock it.

I witnessed someone forget to do this awhile back and their T1 was quite comical.

Remove your computer, elbow pads, saddle bag/ tool kit, and anything else that can be easily taken. Install them when you arrive on race morning.

Overkill except for the computer.

I wouldn’t lock it up because stuff happens and if they need to move your bike for some reason it might be an issue.

Only problem w/ removing your computer, is that you might just forget to put it back on before the race.

My first IM, at IMLP, my LYC spent the day in my dry clothes bag. D’oh!!

There will probably be security over night.

Yeah but you still KQ’d and this after a 1:25iish swim.

Hey now!! I’ll have you know it was a 1:19. So there!
And either of my 2 swim loops would have been a HIM swim PB. (At that time).

Still woulda been nice to have my damn computer on the bike. Rookie mistake.
Even if only for post-race analysis.

I just dropped my bike off for a race tomorrow. Everyone going in had a photo taken with the bike

I think there were about 2750-3000 bikes. many had computers on them, many were far more expensive than mine, ive never in all my time on here which has got to be 15-20 years recalled a post noting something stolen from their bike in transition - cue someone prove me wrong…

In my IM, when they stopped me for a picture with my bike, I asked them if I should smile. They said they didn’t care, so I did. I thought, “How cool. They’re taking pictures of people with their bikes.”

When I mentioned this to my buddy who is an IM vet, he told me it was just a picture for insurance purposes.

What a dumbass.

Get a seat cover if you don’t have one already or just use a plastic bag to cover the seat. Isn’t that what covering your seat is for?

What post race analysis do we need? you ran the 3:24 age group hero run split:

https://www.sportstats.ca/display-results.xhtml?raceid=17510&bib=1114

that’s all the analysis we need. Clearly the lack of Powertap LYC did not result in poor bike pacing. when you run way sub 3:30 AND you KQ, that’s all the analysis we need!!!

Your bike will be fine. Just make sure you check your tires as soon as you get there in the morning.

I’ve done probably 20 IM branded races, all requiring leaving bikes overnight. No problemo. Sleep well.
