So, my hair is turning a “lovely” lighter brown from all the swimming. After some research, it has been recommended that one rinse hair and apply a leave-in conditioner prior to putting on a swim cap.
Anybody have any good recommendations for a leave-in conditioner to protect from chlorine. I was also thinking of getting a single process color treatment, so color protection would be a plus.
HI, I use Wenn haircare by Chaz Dean. It is one of the as seen on TV things with a 30 minute informercial.
It is actually called a “cleansing conditioner” and it is the best thing I have ever used for my hair.
I suddenly have great “charlies angel” volume hair – and my hair is limp and baby fine naturally.
I love this stuff and can’t recommend it enough.
You put it on in the shower and do everything else then wash it out. You also feel like you are using a ton.
I will also use it between a swim and bike / run workout when I don’t need a real shower but want to condition my hair.
Since using it I have had no problems related to chlorinated water – and sometimes my hair would feel like hay after.
Google it - I think I get it from Guthy Renker. O, and I also love that I get four bottles delivered to my door without having to order it.
I used to try to put conditioner in my hair before I swam, but my swim cap always scooched off.
Now I make sure I wet my hair down thoroughly before I swim (the hair absorbs the fresh water this way), and I don’t notice any effects from chlorine. Even my hair dresser is amazed at how healthy my hair is.
As a guy, I really shouldn’t be posting on this. One of my best friends works as a hair stylist and suggested Tigi Catwalk Fast Fix leave in conditioner for my sister-in-law. She definitely likes the product and thought that it surely helped to keep the chlorine effects at bay.
Malibu 2000 is probably the swimmers shampoo that trackie is referring to. I bought the larger bottles from a sports shop and found that it worked well. On a shopping trip with my hair stylist friend I found that the beauty supply house had it for less than half what I paid. I’m not sure how much she is allowed to buy but if anyone needs any and is coming to Tucson for trifest or anything else, PM me and I will see if I can get more.
Pureology Spray leave-in conditioner. It’s light so it doesn’t make the swim cap slide off, and it is fantastic for protecting your color. A bit pricey, but it has made a huge difference in keeping my color true.
I love Neutrogena masks…put a bit on before I put the cap on. But did you know?..if you take your regular conditioner and put just a wee bit on after the rinse, it really works well like a leave in condtioner. Not too much, but just about the size of your thumbnail. This has made my hair days go from, hmmm wonder what it will look like today, to…nice hair every day!
any conditioner (leave-in or otherwise) will coat your hair and minimize contact with the water. i use plenty of cheap conditioner and a large swim cap so it covers my hair entirely and stays on my head despite any slipperiness. so far, i haven’t noticed it leaking out into the water.
i’ve been doing this for years, and it’s always kept my hair from chlorine damage.
I wet my hair, put the conditioner on, then my cap. After I swim, I wash my hair with the same brand shampoo and then condition. It has really helped with my hair.
Completely neutralizes chlorine. I get itchy after pool swimming, but this removes the itch from my skin and any trace of chlorine smell. Worth it’s weight in gold. May seem a little pricey, but a little goes a long ways.
Katy: Thanks for that tip! I get all itchy, too, and will be trying this out ASAP!!
I agree about the conditioner – leave it off!!!
I use wash out color and my hair guy said as long as I saturate my hair before getting in, and wear a good cap I’ll be fine, and I agree.
but then again, I also only try to wash my hair on pool days. So I limit the washing anyway.
I’ve been using Aveda Damage Remedy shampoo and conditioners for awhile and have noticed a HUGE difference in my hair texture/color. I swim at least 5x/week so my hair is constantly saturated with chlorine. My hair stylist also suggested soaking my hair before getting into the pool. The products aren’t cheap but I would rather spend a bit more money to prevent my hair from turning green!
