Leader Bikes: Good, Bad or Ugly?

What is the word on “Leader” frames?

Very GOOD. I have friends that have them. Both the tt and road bikes. Well made and you cant beat the price.

I’m glad you said that. I just purchased a frame, fork and headset from Leader last week to build up a road bike. I ended up getting the 736R. Hopefully it will be a good ride.

My buddy loves his. He also bought the TT bike and even got a road bike for his wife!

I’ve heard positive reviews. Haven’t seen a negative review on any forum to date. I’ve seen some neutral comments, but those are related more to personal preference.

I am in the process of putting a bike together with their 735TT frame. Will post pics once it’s up.

My thought is that if you are going to build up a bike (lets say with ultegra or better) then you would be better off buying a higher quality frame than a leader. True they aren’t bad, my friend bought one and it was cheap but, in the end it was cheaper for him to buy a complete entry level bike (that was his goal) than it was to build the leader frame up with 105 and pay shop build charges and so on.

Do what you want, they are quality frames on the heavy side that can be used for our purposes. Be sure you know what you are doing though because Leader lacks customer service and from my friends experience there is no return policy for these bikes that are purchased from Ebay.

Best of luck!

Not true my man. THe guy who runs the warehouse, Sal, is a pretty good guy. He corrects and will replace anything anytime. Good honest dude seliing a good product!

Really? I apologize if my information was incorrect.

Do you have Sal’s contact information. My buddy is currently trying to return his new frame that he just purchased.

Perhaps it was my friends mistake in his ability to contact Leader or something.

PS - I agree that for the money Leader frames are quality. They are worth the $240 or so that they cost. I would just say not to expect that you are going to get a P2k type quality. Bottom line is that you get what you pay for and if they do have customer service like dvfmfidc says then I affirm anyone who purchases a leader.

I will get that number for you!

I have one, the 735TT, and I like it a lot. It rides well, it’s comfy, and the finish is quite durable.

Also, my experience with their customer service has been very positive. At first I ordered the 730TT, and the frame I received had some problems with the BB shell and the dropouts, and I called and talked to Sal and he sent me a replacement. But the replacement he sent me was the 735TT, the better model, for no extra charge.

That said, I can see where you might get the impression of bad service. Sal, IMO, needs an assistant or at the very least a PDA, because he seems very busy and could forget to return phone calls.

Anyway: thumbs up, good bike.

Love my 735TT. Rides well. Looks cool. Fits well.

However, if I had been looking to upgrade to whole nw Ultegra or DA 10sp bike, instead of moving 9sp components over (or if the Dual was available as a frameset), I would likely have gone with Dual 10sp or something similar for the brand name and well known track record. The big factor for me was cost. The Leader 735TT frame with the carbon fork and Cane Creek headset was only $550. I spent zip on anything else, as I built it up myself.

EDIT

Didn’t want to give the impression I was “sorry” to have gotten the Leader instead of the Dual, or that the Leader is somehow “inferior.” I think it’s a fantastic bike. Circumstances took me to the Leader, where I may not have otherwise gone. It has been a great match so far.

Anybody know the biography of a Leader? Are they just Asain made frames marked “Leader”? If so, I wouldn’t doubt that there are lots of “Leaders” out there wearing the paint of bigtime companies.

Well, how much faster 40k bike split will you go on your $3,000 carbon or Ti frame than the $400 delivered to your door Leader Tri frame? Probably none. It has a 78 degree seat tube, pretty much the “standard” aero tube shape with wheel cutout. Paint and clearcoat, bunches of sizes. Those Fetish guys are doing the same thing. As long as the bike is straight, that is one hell of a deal. Not much bling factor ,but a set of aero wheels, aerobars, and change back price difference is something to make you wonder.

I have no idea where in the East these are made, but you can bet that the little welders in any country hold a tourch pretty well after their 2,000 frame built. Since they are mass produced, I would bet the frame jigs are pretty solid.

With all that said, every one of my dozen or so frames were hand made by someone that I could come up with a name for. If I were in the market for a new bike, I would strongly give them a consideration.
