LBS Trade In of Lemond Road Bike?

So, I am looking to buy a tri/tt bike after deciding to get into the sport more seriously than the past couple of seasons. I have a lightly ridden 2007 Lemond Chambery that has what I think are pretty decent components…all stock from original purchase. I am unsure what to expect as far as trade-in value, or if I should list here and try to sell on my own. Am I more likely to get a better deal working with LBS as they will be wanting me to buy new bike from them? Bike has no cosmetic damage, chips, etc.

Ballpark value would be great…bike specs, as listed from Lemond, are as follows:

Frame Construction TIG-welded/bonded
Frame Tubing Material LeMond 6066 T6 Aluminum/OCLV Carbon
Bontrager Carbon fork

Component Group Shimano Ultegra 10-Speed
Shimano 105 brakes, Shimano Ultegra STI levers
Shimano Ultegra STI shift levers
Shimano 105 FD
Shimano Ultegra RD
Shimano Ultegra, crankset, 39/53 teeth
Shimano Hollowtech II bottom bracket
Rear Cogs 10-speed, 12 - 25 teeth
Chain 1/2 x 3/32"
Bontrager carbon seatpost
Bontrager Race saddle w/Hollow cromoly rails
Bontrager Race VR OS handlebar
Bontrager Race OS stem
Headset 1 1/8" integrated Cane Creek IS2
Wheels
Bontrager Race hubs and rims
700 x 23c Bontrager Race Lite tires

As a SWAG - 20-30% of MSRP. I dont’ know of many shops that do trade ins. I’d try Craigslist/Ebay.

Bikes and bike parts are usually valued for resale for 40-50% of what retail was.

Also very few places take trades so you would be best with the local private sale options.

Generally any bike shop that accepts trade-ins usually doesn’t sell decent bikes at all. Most places that take trade-ins are commuter oriented (trade in your old piece for a new slightly better piece)

Only way I am looking to trade-in at my LBS is if I order a Trek Speed Concept from them. I hadn’t considered a trade-in but when I brought it in recently the shop guy mentioned it, though wouldn’t give estimate on offer until talking to owner (hmmmm, sounds like used car salesman tactic now that I think about it). Otherwise, I am probably going the route of Craigslist/ebay/ST listing and see what I can get. I was just curious what to expect depending on which route I go.

Thanks for the input…you will likely see it posted shortly, in case anyone is intersted in it, its a 57cm Lemond Chambery, with the components listed above. PM me for details, otherwise, look for it on the classified forum!

You won’t get much on a trade unless it’s hardly been ridden. You’d be lucky ot get 1/3 of the original purchase price.

Best to just keep it. It’s nice to have a road bike around to mix things up.

On a beautiful afternoon when I’m not focused on hammering and just out for a moderate pace ride to enjoy the open air for a long sunday or saturday morning ride… a road bike will always be my first choice. More comfortable, more nimble, climbs better.
