Lazy guy gets motivated but can't find his Philsbars

Hi everyone,

I used to lurk here quite a bit several years ago, but life got in the way and my motivation completely disappeared. Something happened recently to get me moving again, and I’m trying to remember all of my old tricks.

One of my favorite (and most effective) tricks was to follow the Zone diet, and one of my favorite Zone-friendly training/racing foods was Philsbars. I’ve noticed that the company no longer seems to be around, and I’m looking for good alternatives. The 40/30/30 composition of those bars worked miracles for me, and I’m trying to find something similar. Has anyone found a good replacement? (Sure, there’s Balance bars and Zone bars, but the Philsbar stuff was “natural,” and didn’t taste or smell like chemicals to me. Has anyone ever smelled a Zone bar?!)

Thanks in advance for any suggestions!

Never heard of it. Sorry

I went to order some and was informed they quit making them. Supposedly (per prolific sports) there is an order coming in. Haven’t heard a status in about a month so who knows.

Thanks for the info. I’ll keep searching. It seems to be the story of my life: once I find something that works really, really well for me (shoes, food, a sane girlfriend) … it gets promptly discontinued!

ummmm…care to explain how sane girlfriends get “discontinued?” Cause I’m thinking thats a pretty morbid way of putting it.

One of the guys from Phil’s started his own company and they’re great bars! PureFit, no crap in them and lots of protein! I highly recommend the chocolate brownie!

Yes! Perfect! Exactly what I need! I forgot to mention my “gluten-free” requirement in my earlier post, and these bars are even gluten-free. I’ll definitely check them out. Thanks very much for the tip!

You didn’t explain what happened to the sane girlfriend yet.

What caused you to get remotivated and can you send me some or tell me where to find it?

Only because I haven’t figured it out yet!

I was going to reply that TwinLab Ironman bars are 40/30/30 but then quick Google search revealed that they are no longer made. So when did IMNA switch to PowerBar? Last time I did a IMNA event (2001) it was those “high-fat” TwinLab bars.

Frustration, boredom, and a busy schedule. In other words, the same things that caused me to lose motivation in the first place!

Several years ago I was pretty dang fit. I never did an Ironman, but I raced the first Lifetime Triathlon and did a couple of off-road events as well. In late 2002, I raced something called La Ruta de los Conquistadores, which is a three-day, 300-mile mountain bike race from the Pacific to the Carribean through Costa Rica. Major mud, major elevation gain, major challenge, and major fun.

But after that, I realized that I was frustrated with my job and bored with my life, and I wanted to do something different. I quit training (not recommended), switched careers (highly recommended), moved to LA, (not recommended), switched careers again (highly recommended), moved to Chicago (highly recommended), and realized that I’m ready to hit it again.

Somehow, having an extremely regimented schedule that involves a lot of thinking (I’m an engineer) makes me want to get out and be active. But I’ve got a lot of catching up to do …

Good stuff and very hekpfull, thanks
