We have an 8 or 9 hour layover @ LAX coming up, what are the options without walking through a security screen? I’ve been told it’s not the greatest place to kill time in.
Take a taxi or Uber-type ride to Santa Monica pier or take the train to Downtown LA then head over to Hollywood for a few minutes then go back to the airport.
Where are you going that has such a long layover?
Well if you are not going to leave the airport security area you really dont have a lot of choices. Maybe get into one of the clubs the airlines have, I think they have a drop in fee. I haven’t been in a long time, but there is the circular and elevated restaurant in the middle of the airport, but not sure if it is connected and within security zones.
Other than that the usual airport malls and swag. If I had that much time I would leave and go down to the beach and hang out a bit, have a meal, maybe a swim or run. Manhattan beach is the nicest, Dockweiler is the closest. Both are 10 to 15 minutes from LAX. Nice running trail too in Manhattan, a kind of horse/gym trail that runs about 8 miles or so long.

Wife’s with me, so that’s out…

Maybe I’m paranoid, but I’m freaked out of the idea of missing the connector. FWIW, flight home from a warm holiday, the long layover was nearly an $800 saving.

Seriously??? Well, I guess not everyone can be Mrs. Duffy …

Hypothetically speaking, suppose you were going somewhere and had a 9 pm flight. Would you get to the airport at noon?

LAX is a awkward airport to get around. It has something like seven terminals if I remember right. If you do do something off campus then give yourself lots of time to get back or you could miss your connection.
Are you coming from an international destination and have to go through immigration and customs? It might take you the whole 8 hours. I hate LAX

Understandable. For the paranoid folks, a daily pass into a lounge may work but it depends on how many travelers you are. LAX is the pits. The only terminal worth spending some time in is Tm Bradley International only because of the silly duty free and high end branded shops. Other than that people watching is the next best thing. If you leave, I suggest going to El Segundo or Manhattan Beach for a meal then back to the airport. The journey is no more than ten minutes away.
Check out the lounges. There are a number of them. I have spent a good amount of time in the Delta Sky Lounge. Nice.

LOL!! Flew into LAX from Toronto and had over two hours layover before catching a connection to Australia. We just made the flight to OZ by about ten minutes by the time we got through customs and caught the shuttle to the next terminal.

reLAX Lounge in the Tom Bradley terminal was great, while it lasted. Not sure why it closed.

Maybe because the airport had been undergoing a complete renovation in the last few years which includes airlines moving terminals. I will leave in a few hours to Beijing then to Seoul and am dreading it because there is nothing to do at LAX and it is cold.
Oh how I wish we were flying through SFO or DEN but we’re not and honestly it’s only an extra 4 hours.

Not knowing when you are flying but being stuck in an airport due to rain or snow is much worse than spending nine hours at LAX.
My first thought was you are screwed. But 8-9 hours is a long time. Forget Santa Monica and the nearby beach towns. Too much traffic and there’s really nothing worth seeing or doing there with so little time.
If you legit have 8-9 hours, I would check out the Getty. Cool museum with great views of the entire socal basin.
It’s probably 45-50 drive each way, maybe less if your uber driving knows his/her way around. Assume 2 hrs drive time (very generous) plus 3 hours at the museum, gives you plenty of time to deal with all the fun at LAX plus hit a lounge or two for cocktails.
My two cents.
+1 on that

I lived in the LAX area for 7 years, but it’s now been 7 years since I left so take this with a grain of salt…
You have more than enough time to get out and see some things. LAX is not an airport I’d want to kill that much time in. A few options that might be worth checking out:
South Bay
- Manhattan Beach Pier Area - lots of bars, restaurants, shops and decent beaches. Great place to run if you want to sneak that in there (on the beach or on the woodchip trail).
- Palos Verdes - worth it to just go walk along the cliffs. Stop by Malaga Cove for a snack, etc. Not a ton to do besides take in the sights, but it’s beautiful. Also a great place to run if you wanted to
Venice/Santa Monica
- It is a bit of a drive down here, but you have enough time. Walk around Venice Boardwalk if you want to people watch. Santa Monica pier and 3rd street promenade are super touristy, but hey, good place to kill time. Tons of restaurants, shops, etc.
Downtown/Getty/etc. are also all great, and you have enough time. It just might be cutting it close depending on what times you’d be traveling to/from as traffic is no joke (obvious statement of the day).
Have fun! Whatever you do…don’t stay in LAX for 9 hours. Oof!
