Latex & Zipp Super 9 - Is Rim Tape Needed?

I have not run tape on my disc in the past and have had mixed results with latex tubes. I assumed the tape was not needed because there are no “spoke holes”. Reading info on Josh @ Silca’s website, states that tape helps with install and reduces pinch flats. Thoughts on running tape on a Super 9?

No reason not to. I used Zipp rim tape and Vittoria latex tubes when I had a Super 9

I asked for it before and was told RIM tape also helps with the heat insulation
.

Run the tape(Silca). Helps with heat dissipation.

Thanks…thats what I installed on it tonight.

You can melt tubeless tape on a rim brake application.

Silca also notes this on their site: “Road Wheels with Rim Brakes can generate temperatures which may exceed the melting point of any rim tape.”

I’ll only use rim tape on a non-tubeless application if the tires are really tight and I need the extra clearance for easier tire install/removal. Otherwise I think a rim strip is better.

The softening/melting point of our tubeless tape is higher than most standard plastic rim strips, however, we recommend at least 2 wraps in rim brake applications as the tubeless tape is much thinner than a rim strip. In the case of a super9 - the rim tape is there more to insulate the tube from the carbon and also to provide a smoother, non-porous surface for the tube to sit on. Tubeless tape is really the best solution in any wheel when running latex due to the ability to run wider tubeless tapes which cover the entirety of the rim surface, and also the adhesive backing of the tubeless tape helps hold it in place eliminating the change of the tape migrating sideways during a tire install, or having the tube creep around the edge of the rim strip. That tubeless tape is lighter and allows for easier tire installation is a nice side benefit!

Stupid question here: Vittoria Latex tubes have only 50mm valve length? Does ist fit in the Super9? Don’t want to use the Michelin with shorter valves…

Yes the vittoria branded latex tubes only comes with a 51 mm valve stem. It will fit on a super 9. You will just be limited to the crack pipe you can use though (the standard zipp/silca one will fit).

Silca now has latex tubes with 42 mm valve stems (the tubes are made by vittoria).
