So it seems like a lot of pundits are saying the Russian offensive in the east is stalling out. The HIMARs seem to be maybe the first “game changer” of the war allowing Ukraine to out range the Russian artillery and hit Russian supply depots and other targets accurately without much chance of being taken out themselves. There seems to be something of a counteroffensive starting in the south with the aim of retaking Kherson.
I saw an interview with the head of a Ukrainian intelligence agency a couple of months ago and his prediction then was the Russian offensive would stall by August and Ukrainian counter offensives would begin.
I still find it hard to believe Russia hasn’t been able to establish any kind of air superiority with videos of Ukrainian planes and helicopters still operating.
Also sounds like that head of the Ukrainian Intelligence Agency (childhood friend of the president) was canned due to failures early on.
Question for the people who know more than me, can these HIMARS be that big of a game changer? My understanding is they only have like four or six of them.

I think that was the first shipment, now there are something like a dozen of them or soon will be?
I think what happens in the south will be interesting. Pretty sure they rolled over at the beginning of the war and didn’t resist. I remember the military commander and other high ranking officials being fired not long after the war started for “treason”.

Finally seems like things are turning around for the Ukrainians. I just heard NRP saying there will be a counter-offensive against Russia. I really hope Ukraine can eventually crush them and drive them out.
On another note, I have this second Instagram account w/o anything political or any war content. Just purely swim, bike, run. It’s a new account and I get followers every day who are athletes and I follow most back. A couple Russians have started following me. Before I follow back I’ve sent a message asking them if they support the war. Both have said no thankfully. One stated his loathing for Putin and the war. Another said he was against the invasion and war of any kind. We briefly chatted about how many Russians support Putin and the war. He said it is very surprising but there is a lot of propaganda. He said many have the Z on their cars and clothing. I really find that worrisome as it sounds very similar to another dark period of recent time (Nazi Germany). I also learned from another source that Russia does not teach its children true accounts of history and previous unprovoked invasions. Russians grow up with a distorted world view and Russia’s past interactions. So, it is no surprise when Russians fall prey to Putin’s lies and state propaganda. How do you change a lifetime of brainwashing? Anyhoo, digressing a bit. But in case anyone is wondering if Russians still support this absurd and horrific war, many do.

The Russian “offensive†in the east did exactly what it was going to do all along, kill time.
As long as Russia fights an artillery fight instead of a combined arms battle, this is what’s going to happen.
I’m the meantime migrants go up, oil is unpredictable, wheat is unpredictable, and Ukraine’s identity in the east and south is erased.

I’m not qualified to analyze, other than to point out the range advantage relative to conventional artillery.
But more and more articles seem to indicate that HIMARS is deliverings cans of whoop-ass.
From what I’m seeing, it seems the biggest way these are being a game changer is that they are able to disrupt the supply lines in a large way and Russia seems to have a large weakness there. Might not be unstoppable, but at the moment, it’s the best tool for poking the weak spot.
Latest reports are the last bridge to Kherson has been hit tonight. If this bridge is unusable, the Russians in the city are pretty much cut off. Next few weeks will be interesting.
This seems the right thread to revive in case anyone wants to discuss latest developments.
Lots of semi-informed opinions on what the Ukranians just used in Crimea on twitter but anyone knowledgeable want to weigh in?
I can’t link from where I am but there seem to have been some pretty huge explosions at a Crimean airbase that was well out of range of HIMARS (or the combination of launch system and munitions that the Ukranians publicly had access to…my knowledge on this stuff stalled out a sentence or two ago). Among the many memorable images from this incredibly documented war, Russian vacationers looking up from their beach cabanas to stare at the mushroom cloud erupting a couple of miles away will be one I’ll certainly remember.

РоÑомаха would be my guess
Wild Internet speculation is that Ukraine may have received ATACMS and this is the first deployment of them.
Tadeusz Giczan on Twitter: “Wow, more than 200km from the front line. Viktor Andrusiv, advisor to the Ukrainian interior minister, just confirmed that Ukraine has received missiles with a range of 200-300km.” / Twitter
The Ukrainians seem to have a knack for these big PR hits. Meanwhile the Russians only seem to get very much attention when they hit an apartment building.

We didn’t give them to them (if we did BIG policy change) I’ll have to see if anyone else has them.

Honestly, if the Ukrainians hit a Russian apartment building, a lot of people would say they deserve it. PR works better when you’re the underdog.
My point was more the Russians don’t seem very good at hitting high value military targets, there’s been a few posts on reddit of Ukrainian supply depots getting hit but it’s got to be about 10-1 in favor of the Ukrainians.

Russians don’t hit high value military targets because they’re not in a high value military fight.
The Russians probably spent a lot of their precision weapons already. There is good evidence they are using KH-22 missiles which were made in the 1960s. They have horrible accuracy.
