i’m looking likely to spend a couple of weeks in vegas in mid-febuary. a few questions:
-what’s the weather going to be like then?
-any must-do workouts/races around then?
-was considering buy a bike while i’m there. any recommended shops in town or surrounds? i’m willing to rent a car and drive if it’s a solid place.
#1 NOAA #2 Get out to Red Rocks and if you are thinking about 70.3 Worlds, get out to Lake Las Vegas and Lake Mead (look at WTC or ITU sites to get the lay of the land). #3 I will leave this to locals
I don’t live in Las Vegas, so I can’t help you on the first two items. I did Silverman in 2007 and 2010, and in 2010 I needed some help from Silverman’s official bike shop, Pro Cyclery. Really smart, professional guys.
I’m envious of those who live in Las Vegas for being able to cycle in the beautiful Lake Mead Recreation Area. I have maps, photos and such in my Silverman race reports that might be of some help to you. 2007 and 2010. Here’s my combination Silverman/tourist 2007 video.
Weather can be a little chilly, average high is 66, low 44, but again coming from Switzerland, it will be warm to you.
There are a number of good cycling routes, including around Lake Mead following the 70.3 WC course or Silverman, south of Henderson to Jean and Goodsprings, and then west of town out to Red Rock and Blue Diamond. In addition, if you want to swim check out the masters swimming at the Henderson Multigenerational center, run by Frank Lowery.
Three bike shops I would recommend include the Bike Shop in Henderson, and Procyclery and McGhie’s in LV. All three have group rides during the week and on weekends.
There are no triathlons that time of year, but a road race, the Calville Bay Classic at Lake Mead the last weekend of February.
Hope that helps,
While in Vegas, look up a little thai restraunt called Lotus of Siam. looks like a shitty place in a stip mall but the food is quite delicious and very much worth the modest prices they charge.
If you go to Blue Diamond, bring a treat for this guy and his family. Rental bikes are available at McGhies Out Post if you want to try some mountain biking while you’re there.
Still very good biking in Feb. , West side at Red Rock, East side at Lake Mead, probably too cold to bike up to Mt. Charleston(11,900’), But good climbing ride up Mt. Podesi. Swim with Masters on East side at Multigen center with Frank Lowery, or on West side at Desert Breeze pool with Vick Hecker. I agree with bike shops listed, and rentals available as well. Mtn biking here is excellent as well if you are in to that. World class rock climbing. Check out Las Vegas Biking Club for calender of weekly rides. Have Fun! Jay
i’m looking likely to spend a couple of weeks in vegas in mid-febuary. a few questions:
-what’s the weather going to be like then? Cold, Damn Cold!
-any must-do workouts/races around then? The Pool at the Multi Gen in Henderson is nice and warm and open from 5 am until I think 9pm, 50 meter long course Tues & Thurs 5am to 11:30am and it’s outside
-was considering buy a bike while i’m there. any recommended shops in town or surrounds? i’m willing to rent a car and drive if it’s a solid place. **There are a number of good shops, I do most of my trading at “The Bike Shop” on Pecos & Wigwam. There are a lot of beautiful places to ride out here, RMT aka River Mountain Trail, Red Rock, Valley of Fire, ride with caution, I think that points are awarded for hitting cyclists, I heard in Henderson the City Council is considering changing the term “Cross Walk” to “PRZ’s” Pedestrian Reduction Zone’s. **
thanks,
-mike
Mike, if working out and exercising is one of your main goals for the two weeks I would consider Phoenix or Tucson area, it’s not as cold, and they both have a lot more running race opportunities that time of year.
