Lucky fucking me, I get to go to Detroit tomorrow through Sat morning. Any inside tips on a lap pool in the area? Staying on Big Beaver Road (no, not a typo). Also running… I am used to running in 40-45 here in So Cal mornings right now, it’s a bit colder there. Anywhere safe to run outside or shall I confine myself to a treadmill?
Assuming you are without a vehicle. Troy is a bit north of Detroit. You will be plenty safe unless you’re black. Then you shouldn’t run you’ll look suspicious. Stony creek metro park is 10 miles north. A nice place to run. Don’t know about pools.
I would go to Crankbrook in Bloomfield Hills, great pool.
You can run anywhere in Troy, it’s not like you are in the hood, Troy is nice and temps will be in the mid 30’s.
Lifetime Fitness in Troy, about 2 miles north of Big Beaver (which BTW is Exit #69 off of I-75) off of Crooks. They also have a great community center at Big Beaver and Livernois. FYI, Troy is one of the safest cities in America, and just north of Troy is Rochester, where the Hansons-Brooks team is based (you know all those people from olympic marathon trials), and there’s lots of great running too.
Actually, you are lucky to come here, this is a great place…

So True. Also make sure you aren’t doing anything in your car except for driving, you’ll most likely be pulled over.

x100
As for pools, on Livernois is the Troy community center. I don’t know what their schedule is but you could swim there.
Big Beaver Road
If you are coming up I-75, its Exit 69 - no joke.
Clawson High School does open swim Wed 7:30-8:30 and Friday 6:30 to 8:30, cost is 4 dollars. If you are staying on Big Beaver, take Livernois Rd south about 2 miles. Before you get to 14 Mile Road, you will pass a the city hall/police station on the right hand side the high school is behind them.
Troy is a pretty nice area, a lot of businesses and you are perfectly safe to run at anytime.

Used to live off this exit.

Definitely safe, plenty of options for athletes, lots of great music/ art/ culture in Detroit proper (and some in Ferndale), good sports teams…
…but still, Lansing seems big enough for me. I think my soul would shrivel up and die every time I had to drive on one of those god-awful suburb sprawl roads. Everything just runs together.
If you’re staying at the Marriott or Drury, you’re very close to the Troy community center which, as others have said, has a pool & treadmills. Lifetime fitness is about three miles to the northwest. If you talk to a sales rep there, you might be able to get a few free passes to the facility.
On the north side of Big Beaver is Town Center Drive, Civic Center Drive, and Huber park - all of which are good places to run. There are numerous middle/high schools in the area with outdoor tracks too.
There’s no downtown, per se, in Troy, but it’s a nice area to live.
Live in Troy as well. Exit 69, Big beaver rocks! As long as there is no snow (or you don’t mind snow) you can run many a loop on sidewalks around Troy. Some rolling hills if you hit the west side of Troy. Echo the comments on the community center pool (248.619.7270; 3179 Livernois - right around the corner from the Troy Marriott).
I know a girl that lived in Lincoln park on Dix and Champaign
