pretty sure those are shoe covers, not the shoes themselves…flywire implemented (or painted) for marketing…look at ToC pictures…at least they look like covers to me.
I would dig a bit deeper and research the shoes. Nike has been pushing flywire technology into all their running shoes it would only make sense that this overlap into the cycling products. The running shoes are comfortable and very light without losing cushion.
All I can say is it’s good to see he has another bike. Thank god he won’t have to drop out of TOC for lack of bike.
I have no idea what flywire is.
Those appear to be aero shoe-covers that he has on over his shoes.
The shoes that he was wearing in traning last fall and in the early part of tis year were clearly, Rocket-7’s, then all of a sudden when he was down at the Tour of Australia, it appeared that the shoes were the same ( Rocket-7’s ??) with a Nike logo on them.
So not sure what is up. Nike said they were getting out of the cycling and cycling shoe business a few years ago, but with such a Marketing force as Armstrong back in the game, they may be re-thinking this.
If he is doing windd tunnel testing, they have to be shoe covers. It’s amazing how Nike has gotten into so many sports over the years, prior to my tri addiction I played hockey, they didn’t come in on their own so they bought Bauer, now its Nike Bauer. My guess is that if Nike wants to come into cycling they will buy someone, maybe not a huge company, but I could see it in the next year or two. This sport is exploding through the triathlon side and it would be a pretty easy advertising crossover. We shall see…
those are shoe covers and judging by the alignment of the “flywire” on it, im inclined to believe its just a printed design. Same goes for his TT gloves. And im pretty sure he’s currently weartesting a new Nike plate with a rocket7 upper.

the plate doesnt look like any rocket7 plate i’ve seen. And he’s twittered about discussions with Nike about his new shoe before.

Nike has been in cycling for a pretty long time. They don’t have to buy their way into the industry. As for tri, Simon Whitfield, Cam Brown, Kieran Doe and Vanessa Fernandes are all Nike athletes.
Looks like he is testing wheels too. Is that a Zipp in the background?
This discussion is hilarious in its inaccuracies.

Yes and No.
It’s a sport that they seem to get on board and off board with depending on the marketing opportunities at their disposal. Their was an announcment several years ago, that Nike was “getting out of cycling” - this was shortly after Armstrong retired for the first time. Now, he’s back in the game and it would appear that Nike’s interest in the category is rising again.
Smart marketers up their in Beaverton - seriously. They know a good opportunity when they see it. Notice their is no talk about the recession or depressed markets from Nike - blah, blah blah. They know one fact - more eyeballs than ever will be watching Pro cycling this year, and many of those eyeballs will be on one rider!!

who me? i just put out what i think is going on with Lance and Nike. never said it was fact.

bontrager prototypes made by Hed.
And i stand corrected about Nike being in cycling for awhile. Im just interested to see if they come up with any tri stuff once Whitfield starts doing more 70.3s.
What I wan to know is what kind of rear skewer he’s using…

Again, this was a market that Nike has been into and out of. Back in the late 80’s during triathlons first big growth spurt Nike was actually one of the first apparel companies to have a full, dedicated Triathlon apparel line for training and racing. The stuff was well made, well designed. Shoes like the Sock Racer - were desgined with the triathlete in mind( and in my view it’s still one of the best designed racing shoes for triathletes). Nike sponsord many of the the absolute best triatthletes of the day - Mark Allen in particular. But then they backed away from the sport and now, to them, I am sure it’s way down on the list of marketing, sponsorship and selling priorities.

It is the same as the one on my 09 Gary Fisher Presidio (with Bontrager Race Wheels), could be Bontrager or GF, either way its a Trek product.

Look at the close up of the top pic and look at the wheel in the background not attached to the bike and tell me the brand.
Fer Christs sake Steve. Please leave your LONG LONG resume and living the life in the world of Triathlon on the wayside. We dont need any facts diluting our conjecture.
I don’t think he is on a trainer or in the wind tunnel. He’s on a road, and thats someone riding with him.

Chip,
Would this be a good time to say that when Nike was wanting to seriously get into cycling apparel in the late 90’s that they contacted us at Sugoi to make it for them?
Oh, now you are just bragging.
