Lance's Bike Fit

Has Lance always ridden a 58cm Trek frame? Seems like it would be large for the average person of his size? Anyone know his height, inseam and basic measurements?

The older OCLV and Madone frames had short headtubes and fit like a typical europro frame (long reach, short stack) if you just ignored the published size (i.e., 58=56). The newer Madones probably fit the same in the pro version.

What would be funny is if Lance asked ST to critique his TT position. I am sure we would get all the closet experts to come out and explain how awful it is…

according to wikipedia, he’s 5’11".

i am 5’10" and i have ridden a look frame with a top tube that’s 57.5cm long for the last couple of years (90mm stem). lance is an inch taller than me, and the top tube is 0.3cm shorter. he’ll easily fit the frame, though why pictures have shown his frame with spacers is a bit puzzling to me. he should easily be able to ride without spacers, though maybe he has lost some of his flexibility.

Lance’s bike is usually listed as being a “58”. I am not sure how Trek sizes up their frames, but it looks more like a “56” with Lance sitting on it. It seems small and Lance is not that tall at 5’11". So while it’s listed as a 58, it’s got to be a very small 58. I ride a 58 Cervelo and it’s a much bigger frame than that.

As for the spacers - Lance has always ridden with not much drop on his road bikes and no matter that variety of Trek frames that he has ridden over the years, has always seemed to have about 2cm of spacers under the stem.

Lance rides a 58cm Pro fit.

Treks tend to run on the small size. My 60cm pro Madone fits a lot like a few 58cm bikes I have owned from other companies.

I believe Trek measures centre top on their frames, where traditional euro’s measure centre to centre. This can account for ±2cm

Thank you. That might explain it. It’s actually harder then ever these days to really measure frames with all the swooping curvy lines of many of the Carbon frames these days. There really is no such thing as center-to-center, because it’s hard to figure out where that center point actually is!

Some companies call it a ‘virtual’ measurement…

Agreed…

Trek Madone Pro 58cm:
Stack: 566 mm
Reach: 400 mm

Cervelo S1 56cm:
Stack: 560 mm
Reach: 394 mm

Do you take a look at the Madones that come back on warranty repair/replacement?

Lance has REALLY long arms (IIRC), which may be a factor in riding a bike that seems larger than what he ought to ride.

Lance is 5’10" right? How long is his reach?

Yeah, he looks a little like a chimp, doesn’t he?

Trek Madone Pro 58cm:
Stack: 566 mm
Reach: 400 mm

Thank you, so that’s why it looks like a 56!!
