What a waste of TV time, it wasn’t even funny.

Wow that just made me angry. Except for jon stewart, he rocks.

I would love to put Sir Charles on a bike and have him ride up Brasstown Bald or Wintergreen; he might have a different take on the subject.

Good grief guys, lighten up. It was a funny piece. Stewart nailed it when he said to Barkley “I get it…you’re just talkin’ shit”…and then Barkley admits “yeah, I just like bustin’ (bicyclists) and race car drivers’ chops…”

geeeee…definitely agree Mike…CB doesn’t believe that crap…if everyone comes and says: LA is an athlete, there is no show…it’s just for fun…
Nothing serious in there.

Now that you are an American living in Europe are you suckin up and dissing Lance???

You must be trying to impress some French Girl…

Just joking – I am sure you still have your naked Lance Poster hanging in your house.

My favorite line from CB:

“The bike is doing most of the work…”

huh?

.

I think the same could be said for Shaq. I mean all he has to do is sit under/around the rim and reach over the dudes head and slam it everytime. Sheer brute strength does not an athlete make.

He’s got skills, just look at his free throw percentage!

If Lance was black, Barkley’d be lovin’ him … oh, wait, … Tiger’s black … never mind.

Ed “Too Tall” Jones rode the Hotter’n Hell Hundred in Witchita Falls Texas back in the 90’s. He said it was the hardest thing he’s ever done…and he just did the metric century.

I would say non-team sports athletes are the best athletes (yes golf included). Simply because the best athletes are the ones who succeed as individuals by their own effort (not hiding behid a team) and that effort can be easily measured by the results of the event.

Individual sports are all about individual effort and to a certain extent genetics. There is no team to blame and no team to thank. If you are good and disciplined you succeed…

Team sports present too many variables. You have a coach which may not like you… There may have a big star on your team and all the plans will revolve around him ultimately everybody on the team will become anonymous heroes just because of one or two guys getting all the publicity and opportunities.

How can we tell who is the best Piston or the best Heat or the best Yankee? Only the guy getting the most publicity and/or exposure is the one who will shine and get the fame and the big bucks.

So that said we can say Shaq is the best center. But is he the best player? Probably not. Is he the best paid? Certainly yes… I’m sure I can beat Shaq at free throws does that makes me the best athlete? Certainly not.

Individual sports only have two variables… Speed and endurance. Who is the fastest guy and who will endure the distance?

Was he the crackhead??? No. Wait, that was Hollywood Henderson. I get all those 70’s Cowgirls confused.

Btw, cycling is very much a team sport (except for TT).

Cheers,
Alex

yeah, I think you’re on to something there. I have always had a special admiration for decathletes, given the wide range of events they have to master and the pennies thrown their way in endorsements. Brian Clay, the guy from Hawaii who just won the world championship decathlon, has got to be the most underrated and underpublicized U.S. athlete to have come along in a long time. The guy is the ultimate “Mighty Mouse!” Hope he gets a Nike contract or something.

Out of respect to “Too Tall Jones”, How much did he train for the event? Also did he even have a bike that would fit a 6’9" 280 lb man?

Athleticism is relative to the task being attempted, and I would have to say that “Too Tall Jones” was a great athlete to have the agility, skill (for his sport) at the size he was during his playing career.

I can ride a metric century easily, however if I played a series as an NFL defensive lineman I would probably say it was the most difficult thing I had ever done simply because I do not have the requisite skills. It’s all relative.

As I recall, he had been riding quite a bit, since he was having knee issues. He rode a mountain bike, and I’m certain the 30mph gusting wind had a lot to do with the difficulty, since his torso would be the equivilant of a sail.

But hey, he was just riding a bike. How hard could it be?
