Lake Tahoe riding

I’m in LT (Zephyr Cove) for 2 weeks for holidays. Apparently, riding around the lake is somewhat a popular ride (from the mapmyride files) but
US50 seems to be highly travelled, cars go fast, and the shoulder is on and off. So, it doesn’t seem particularly safe. Any idea if that’s correct?
I got some options already from one STer, just would like to know if US 50 is best left alone.

And happy 10 days before July 14 to everyone

I rode the lake yesterday. Not the best ride but if you leave really early and go clockwise it isn’t bad, especially next week.

You can also go out Pioneer Trail near the casinos and get some decent riding. Think there’s a good bike path once you get out there.

Key is to ride early right now.

Another good one is to go east on 50 and then take 28 towards Incline. At first stop light (Country Club) go right until it deadends at Mt. Rose Hwy, then go right again and climb to the top.

I was going to circumnavigate the lake last time we were up there, and went to LBS (think it was Factory bike) to rent a road bike to that end. They said it was definitely not recommended due to traffic. Early enough may be OK, but just FYI.

I took a chance since I noticed that with other riders, cars were very careful. No problem whatsoever. Started around 8.45am today. Super scenic ride.
Definitely a massive change from my boring Texas rides, with 4 turns

As pointed out, ride early and clockwise. Also, the climb up Country Club and then Mt. Rose is indeed a cracker, and you can come down the other side and visit Reno too. The climb home is a bitch though

Most of the Hwy 50 section when you ride clockwise is pretty fast, so speed differentials to traffic aren’t as bad.

Up and down 50 to Reno is done already. Fun climb aside from the headwind
The climb up kingsbury, both sides, now that was brutal.

Too bad you are not around a little longer. You could do the Donner tri on July 28th. IMO, the best race course I have ever been on.
