Last night at the ceremony in the park, it was announced that there are 600 women vying for 100 Kona Slots. The F 45-49 is the largest AG and the oldest female is 71. They did not announce the Male slots, but I believe that there are 40 for Nice. There will be 1,600 Men, the largest AG is M50-54 and there are two 76 year old lads.
Weather looks good, no rain, high around 78 degrees Fahrenheit. May the iron gods of the Adirondacks be good to all.
As far as pros go Josh Amberger will not take his slot even if he qualifies as I guess he has a wedding to attend during Nice. This is according to Skipper.

Thanks for the post. I would be interested in the final slot allocation if you have the info after it takes place.
Thanks.

looking at the tracker its 471 women…I think its an additional 100 slots on top of the usual slots, could be wrong on that part?
I finished in 15:45ish, not sure what my official finishers time that will be posted. Anyway, I’m too F’ing tired to go to the Awards and roll down this morning but hopefully somebody else can provide insight.

Assuming you are male from your username, I have no other information about you but if you went to awards, I bet you would get a slot…
Women took all slots but deep roll for some age groups. Men is basically anyone who wants to go can, my sense is that they are not going to get all the slots allocated.

Seriously - that is not just this race. I have been to 2 allocation events post race this year. Both times if you were male and wanted a slot - you basically got your credit card out and got one.
Its not just a Kona v Nice thing either - its a triathlon is a sport that is shrinking post covid thing as well. Ironman have lots of other brands to build (HauteRoute and UTMB are 2) and there are only so many athletes to fill the slots across all sports. Ironman got a lot of athletes to tempt moving forward with the portfolio they are building, its not just Kona anymore.

From a friend who is there
That’s great for all those women. I’m happy for those ladies dreaming the impossible dream, hoping for a slot, and got one!
"On the woman’s side, there are not enough females that want to race Kona to fill up that race. "
Wrong. Women want to go to Kona. However, IM screwed up by improperly allocating slots this past year. For some unknown reason, IM gave a handful of races over 100 slots while some races only had the regular amount. I did a race at the tail end of last fall and desperately wanted to go to Kona. The race I did WAS NOT one of the arbitrary “extra 100 slots” races. However, there were only 2 slots in my AG and they didn’t roll. It stung quite a bit since I watched people at those “extra 100 slot races” with far and places slower finishing times all gets slots. But, I got over it and mapped out my 2023 season without having Kona on the list. I have a bunch of friends who wound up in the same situation.
Fast forward to now and they are sending emails out to these people asking them to go to Kona.
Did these women want to go to Kona at the time they actually raced? Yes.
Do they still want to go to Kona? Yes.
But, can they currently afford to go to Kona after already spending their PTO and money elsewhere? No.
It’s not about WANTING to go to Kona. It’s about BEING ABLE to go to Kona.
I 100% would have taken a slot had I gotten one at the time I raced in 2022. But, my money and PTO have since been allocated to other races and goals. Had IM evened out their slot distribution originally, I bet they wouldn’t be sending e-mails now.
The women for tri bonus events might have made more sense to publicize bonus slots more than a year out. I assume people already had their race plans somewhat decided when Ironman announced random slottery location winners. What a waste of an incentive at some of those bonus events.
It sounds at Placid some women were expecting this though since they all went, so maybe the concept can work given enough advance notice.
The womens rolled past 10th in the larger age groups but all were taken
I took mine in the men’s 50-54 , I was the only one in the top 10 that did so , offered up to the rest of the field , only one or maybe two took them
Was repeated throughout , i suspect of the 65 , more than half were not allocated

Without disputing any other reasons, it surely doesn’t help that the race in Nice is on September 10, only seven weeks from yesterday. Forget the training turnaround. That’s just not very far away for planning a trip that will not be inexpensive for anybody from the US and for which most people will want to take a chunk of time off of work.

Curious about your situation if you wish to respond:
Are you concerned about doing another full in 7 weeks?
Have you checked into travel arrangements, or did you already have this planned ahead of time?
Why do you want to race Nice? WC or location or both?
