Lake Placid Ironman and Placid Planet

What an amazing event. Hats off to Ironman USA and the city and people of Lake Placid, NY. Anyone who competed in this event knows that Lake Placid was extremely organized and a ton of fun. The volunteers were amazing, the whether was great and overall atmosphere was incredible.

In addition, great job to Placid Planet for being open when we needed you. 24 hours a day of round the clock service was great. I appreciate you working on my bike and fixing my gear slips.

As Lake Placid being my first IM, I am now hooked on IMs and am hoping to compete again in the near future. I also plan on taking a vacation in Lake Placid b/c of the experience I had.

A memorable weekend and a damn good event!

I couldn’t agree more. I arrived in LP on Thursday night, in the pouring rain. I ran inside to check into my hotel, head down to avoid getting soaked. 5 minutes later I came running back out, all excited to get to sleep so I could hit the Gatorade swim at 7am on Friday. I jumped into the car and drove off, bike firmly on my roof rack. Immediately I heard the bang. Yes, in my haste I never looked UP. There was a low overhang and I drove my bike right into it. There was a mangled mess of carbon and aluminum now dangling from my car. I couldn’t believe my eyes. All those hours on the bike for THIS? After I told the hotel that I wrecked their overhang, they informed me of Placid Planet’s 24 hour service. The guys there were awsome. I could barely speak when I brought in my bike. No need, they kind of figured what happened. They took the whole thing apart, inspected it all, replacing what NEEDED to be replaced, and salvaging (sp.?)the rest. I walked out of there 2 hours later, at 1:30am, feeling better than I did when I packed the bike up the first time. Hats off to these guys, top notch operation. Oh, and look out for the low overhang at the Mirror Lake Inn.

I agree with the comments on Placid Planet. I did not catch names, but the bike mechanic was extremely helpful in my moment of need. And where else (brick and mortar) can you go at 3am to look at bike stuff? Not that I would, but I could.

The answer is that you could also get that kind of service from High Peaks Cyclery. They are a great shop whose owner is a Kona qualfier, though not this year.

They are good people.

Kenny is the owner and a great guy! They use to be farther out of town toward the Tops, but moved in a few years ago to across from Mustard, Custard and Brew. I love going over to Placid Planet and have plenty of time to look around the shop as my family gets an ice cream across the street! Z

No doubt, they’re both great shops.

Funny that a town with 3,000 residents has two great shops like that within walking distance of one another, while here at home, I have to drive almost an hour across a metro area of 2 million people to get to a decent shop.
