Doing a little post race recovery analysis and found some interesting stats:
295 DNF (or Finished after the 17 hour cutoff)
1,653 Official Finishers
1,948 Total Participants Started
DNF Rate is 295/1948, which is 15% DNF’d.
Since I’m in the M60-64AG, found the following:
26 out of 73 DNF’d, which is 35%
In the M65-69, which I can look forward to next year,
12 out of 31 DNF’d, which is 37%.
Realized that this is a young persons event after pulling up the M30-34AG,
14 out of 160 DNF’d, which is only 9%.
Also realized that there are more entrants in the M30-34 AG then there are in M60-99 (all totaled together).
The Results are either listed 1 thru 1,948 or else you must select an Age Group. I tried to pull the Female DNF rate and the Male DNF Rate for comparison purposes, but the Results page required a specific Age Group. It did not list Females 1 to N; or Males 1 to N.
The moral of the story is that the older you get (once you are over the hill), the percentage of DNF’ing accelerates.
Is that a high dnf rate? I thought it was normally lower.
I think 10 to 12 percent is normal ish. Under 10 is relatively low. 15 isnt super high, at least to me. Placid will probably always have a couple percent more than other races due to course difficulty (bike course elevation).
Gotta be 18 to 20+ for me to consider it high dnf rate for an ironman. After my sister DNFed Florida in 2021, I did sort of a deep dive on DNF rates so this is where I’m getting these opinions .
I DNFed for the first time at Lake placid and it sucks ass!
That said As I was walking out of town to meet my wife they started pulling people off the bike course who didn’t make the cut off and I felt super sorry for them. They were so close and just emotionally spent.

No not at all need to get to 20/25% before it is high. That will normally happens either due to hars course and wind/sun being crazy on the day.
I did Frankfurt in 2019 and i think it was in the 25-3% dnf. Bike/run in 37* /98 fahrenheit. People were just lying by rthe road on the bike and in medic tents on the run, never seen anything like it.
