Each year I’ve spent a few winter months in the Tucson area training for the upcoming triathlon season. I’m looking to try a new area (Lake Havasu) but have no idea if thats a good location. I’ve asked this question on the Lake Havasu Forum but have not gotten any response. Usually Slowtwitch always has a comment on any subject so I put this question out there. How is the s/b/r training around Lake Havasu?
Thanks,
Any info would be appreciated.
Havasu is a great place. It is like a small town but, because it is a resort area, it has big city amenities. The people are wonderfully friendly and, as promoter of the Havasu Triathlon, I can tell you they like triathlons. The lake tends to be cold in the winter (50s) but they do have a community pool. It is fantastic facility but I don’t know the lap swim hours. Running is great. You can run on the track, up and down hills in neighborhoods or along the lake. There is enough variety for every day of the week. Your big issue will be biking. There are not miles of roads to bike on, no way to go on a 75 or 100 mile ride. The only way in and out of town is on SR 95 and that is a death trap with all the motorhomes and boats. There is limited riding in the town but you can certainly get in a lot of hillwork and short rides (20+). Another alternative would be to base in Havasu and drive to Kingman or Parker for your long rides. At any rate, if you do go to Havasu you will have a great time.
Thanks for your input. Cycling is the main reason to go south for the winter. We can run & swim here in Canada via indoor pools and indoor track with the occasional long run outdoors w/o a problem. I think I’ll look at Hemet, CA. I talked to as triathlete a while back at IM Utah and he suggested Hemet.
Thanks again.
