LA Triathlon has been cancelled 3 days before event

I’ll directly quote the email, but i’ll just say, you do a Jack Caress/Pacific Sports event, this is what you should expect. He’s hustled numerous vendors and cities to the point that many cities have kicked him out and i’m not sure where he gets many of his supplies from given many vendors will not work with him at this point. Not shocked someone finally burned him back. And for what it’s worth, I wouldn’t trust a damn word he says in the email below, if you buy what he’s selling, I’ve got some land in africa to sell you…

To all participants of the LA Triathlon at Torrance Beach:

Yesterday, the city of Torrance canceled the 2016 LA Triathlon at Torrance Beach. With much regret, we are forced to announce this cancellation to our participants and sponsors only 4 days prior to race day. We understand that the cancellation will come with great disappointment to those of you who have worked hard and prepared for months toward this year’s triathlon. We are disappointed by the unexpected and unprecedented circumstances and demands that have unfolded to cause this cancellation.
We have listed the key points that led to the city’s cancellation of our event in an effort to offer some immediate transparency to all participants:
On August 31st, the City of Torrance sent to Pacific Sports an email demanding advanced payment, in full, to the city, prior to the event, for city services. There was no detail of the charges, simply amounts in total and the requirement to bring two cashier’s checks by 5pm. This is not standard practice in other municipalities and certainly not in those where all previous invoices had been paid in a timely fashion. In the same email on August 31st, we were informed that a significant separate payment was also required to be paid to the neighboring City of Palos Verdes, a city in which we have no footprint, no permit, no participants enter their city as part of our course, no liability coverage, and no relationship of any kind. This demand is unprecedented in our 36 year history as an event production company, and to our knowledge unprecedented in the event industry in the United States. This payment is demanded by Torrance (to be paid to Palos Verdes) although we have never been made aware of the apparent business relationship (although it has been requested) between Torrance (where we do have permits) and the city of Palos Verdes. Also in this email, it was finally revealed by the City of Torrance, after an audit requested by Pacific Sports, the city had significantly overbilled us by an amount in excess of 30% to the total in 2015 for city services. We have strong evidence that the 2014 invoice may have been overbilled as well. Importantly, we have no reliability that the advance payment demanded for 2016 (without detail of its calculation) is backed up by verifiable charges which will only be available after the event has occurred. Since August 31st, we have worked tirelessly with all levels of the city government including the city council and Mayor’s office in an attempt to bring resolution. We offered a structured and fair written compromise on these issues in attempt to insure the event went on as planned on September 11th. Ultimately, the city offered no compromise or proposed solution and informed us they had unilaterally canceled the event.
We are upset and deeply disappointed by the cancellation, but the requirements were unreasonable and excessive. Accepting the terms would have compromised the entire event and were untenable for us to continue at the current site for the LA Triathlon.

Moving Forward
We are now moving positively forward to our 15th Annual Long Beach Triathlon on September 18th and the 38th Newport Beach Triathlon on October 2nd. We want you to join us. We realize this is not the perfect solution for a cancelled event in Torrance, but these are races we are very proud of and we hope you will be able to race in one of them if you happen to not be already registered.

Your Options
Our partners at Active Network have made it possible to transfer your entry from the LA Triathlon to either the Long Beach Triathlon (September 18th), Newport Beach Triathlon (October 2nd), or our U.S. Open Triathlon in Dallas (October 16th) or alternatively any event on our calendar for 2017.
The procedure is simple and straightforward. Simply go to your Active registration and select “Transfer to Another Event” and pick your selected event. Or, if it is easier for you, email us your full name and the event you would like to transfer to at latriathlon@pacificsportsllc.com and we will make the change for you.
If transferring to another event will not work for you, please let us know by sending an email to latriathlon@pacificsportsllc.com and we can process a refund through Active.
We want to thank our very loyal sponsors, Triathlon LAB, ROKA, Clif Bar, Arrowhead, Herbalife, Erdinger, Active Network, MarkAllenCoaching, Tri-FAQ, South Bay Triathletes and all of our crew and volunteers who were ready to produce the event this weekend.
I personally apologize for the inconvenience this cancellation causes to both you and your families. If you would like to reach me directly, please email me at jcaress@pacificsportsllc.com.

Sincerely,

Jack Caress
President, Pacific Sports LLC

He’d better get his lawyers paid - I am thinking that the city of Torrance is likely to go after him for defamation.

Jack lives for lawsuits! Not sure if there’s been a time in the last decade where he wasn’t actively involved in a lawsuit either on the attacking or defending end. Somewhere out there there’s a lawyer who’s probably made an entire career litigating for pacific sports!

This is about par for the course with this clown show operation. Last year they forgot to mark the run turnaround in Long Beach and also proceeded to stiff the winners of their sprint series (forcing us to talk to the sponsors directly). Would steer clear of Pacific Sports and enjoy the many other options for local tris in and around LA…

Active.com will not refund L.A. Triathlon participants because they have not been authorized by pacific sports. Here is a direct email from Active … to pacific sports :

Hello Los Angeles Triathlon at Torrance Beach 2016,

I work with Active Network’s Consumer Support team. We have a request from your participant, -----, to have his registration refunded. David said you canceled the event and he was told to contact Active for a refund. However, we are unable to refund him without receiving an official authorization from you. The participant’s information is as follows:

Order number: -----
Customer email: -----

Please kindly help this participant with his refund request, and let us know if you have any additional questions. If you do not know how to issue a refund, please feel free to contact your Account Manager here at Active.com for assistance.

Here is Jack CAress’s reply :
No refunds are to be issued by Active. We will begin reviewing these next week.

Jack Caress

Anyone want to help advocate or help me get back my $$$ … or at least discuss options … other than snarky I told you so …

Glad I don’t have to chase a refund here. If Long Beach costs less to enter, does he give you back the difference?

Pacific Sports authorized Active.com to transfer our fees to a different race, Long Beach / Redondo or something …

But they are NOT authorized to just refund us our money.

Sounds like it’s gonna be a fight to get money back …

Sorry you’re having to go through this. The only thing I can offer to any users of this board…

DO NOT DO PACIFIC SPORTS EVENTS.

That includes LA Tri, Newport Beach Tri, Long Beach Tri, US Open Tri, Brooklyn 15k, and the Cleveland Tri.

You are absolutely gambling with your money, safety, time, patience, and numerous other things if you elect to allocate your dollars to a very shady enterprise. There are so many other hardworking RDs who put on phenomenal races. Spend your money there.

Caress has cancelled more events in the past 2-3 years than most RDs cancel in their life time.

Not signed up, haven’t raced with PacSports in many years, not a fan, but … I think their “cancellation” email was clear:

please let us know by sending an email to latriathlon@pacificsportsllc.com and we can process a refund through Active.

They didn’t say, contact Active for a refund. They said contact Pacific Sports, who will process it. Then the later messages between PacSports and Active say they’ll deal with it next week. So maybe email PacSports as directed, then wait till next week to pitch a fit if they don’t respond.

Sorry this happened to you so late in the game. Hope you find another race soon.

Also made the news:

.

Am I the only one thinking it’s kind of ironic to have a race director of a triathlon arguing that they are asked to pay ahead of time for services rendered? This is the sport of pay $700 a year ahead if you want to race after all…

Personally I find it odd that he’s balking at paying fees two weeks in advance. I’ve had to pay anywhere from 3 weeks to 3 months in advance for some services for events. Permitting agencies give you an itemized invoice of most fees upfront and expect payment so they can cover their additional expenses. Variable fees that get billed afterward such as trash and lifeguards, PD overtime ,etc. (dependent on final numbers) get billed anywhere from 30-90 days afterward. All pretty standard operating procedure.

Pacific Sports website is down : http://www.pacificsportsllc.com/

it’s looking bleak … for refund …

It’s up…

same thing happened with pacific sports with Brooklyn Triathlon in Coney Island. I mean IDENTICAL! letter was sent out. smh

Getting thrown under the City of Torrance bus…

"The City of Torrance explained its side in an official press release and in an interview with Triathlete. “ was fully aware of what the breakdown was,” and “did know what the billing was for,” says Fran Fulton, the city’s economic development manager. Fulton says that her office and Caress had had monthly meetings leading up to the event and that “if he had disputes, he had several months to bring it up.” She says the prepayment policy had been in place for the past two years, and nothing about it changed in 2016.
She also says overbilling is common with city event planning. “We always do estimates based on the numbers we have,” she says. “Oftentimes higher, but we always reimburse that amount.” Finally, she explained that the $7,200 fee would have paid for the City of Palos Verdes Estates to put up message boards advising drivers that one of the main routes into that city would be closed during the event."

Totally agree, Why produce events when you can cancel them and keep the Money. Has done more harm then good for the sport of Triathlon.

Boulder Peak was cancelled the night before (about the time most were going to sleep). Some showed up to the race site only to find it was cancelled. At least they offered an entry to the following year’s event & a couple others. Things happen. Life happens.

Just returning the favor to Caress. The truth obviously lies somewhere in between these two stories but given the history of pretty much exactly this happening before I give a little bit of the nod to Torrance here

And to be honest good riddance. It’s a joke of a course (I live half a mile from it)
