What I mean is it safe to swim sort of alone in the morning? I remember that there are quite a few swimmers and triathletes out there on weekdays in the morning but can’t remember if they have lifeguards or not. I’ll be vacationing at Pacific Beach and want to do an OWS at La Jolla.
Its safe. No boats allowed and monitored by lifeguards. I wear a swim cap just to be a little more noticeable, but even if you swim early you won’t be alone this time of year. Enjoy your trip.
It’s perfectly safe.
It’s perfectly safe.
Yep. Just like Solana.
Doesn’t stop me from swimming at Oceanside either.

Plenty of people swim, but it is worth noting that there is a seal colony there, so there are seal predators too. Your choice.
I swim it a couple times a week and still have all my fingers and toes, no worries!
I swim there 3 times a week, no problems. I have done it alone but it really is always best to swim with someone or next to someone. That being said there are groups of swimmers that start around 6:30am almost everyday, I would suggest just making friends with someone and ask if you can swim with them. I beleive the lifeguards get to the cove around 9 or 10am and even earlier at the shores.
The Tri Club does a group swim every Monday at 6:00pm from the south end of the Shores (next to the bathroom) and every Friday at 6:00pm from the Cove. Just get there early, feet wet at 6:00pm. There are also a bunch of other “small” tri club groups that go there, looking at my e-mail there have been people from the club swimming there Wednesdays at 6:30am, 9:30am and noon.
Have fun, its a great place to swim!!
It’s a fantastic place to swim. I can’t believe I haven’t swum there all season. Your question makes me psyched to get out there and I’ll be there Sunday afternoon for sure. One particularly cool thing is that the seals and sea lions are very curious. Sometimes the follow you on your swim and one once brushed my feet which freaked my out a bit. It’s the best.

Best ows spot in SD…look at the bouys first and plan your on shore sighting. If in doubt, the tower at the La Valencia Hotel is almost always visible from any spot in the water- head to it to bring you back to the cove.
BTW- all those seals and sea lions hanging around are a source of controversy .The environmentalists are winning, obviously, but the swimmers are sick of the cove becoming a " Mc Shark" kiosk…
The leopard sharks don’t show up until later this month or next. But they are not interested in you.
Yeah, “McSharks”.
Only reason that diner isn’t so frequented is because of the hassle to get to it.
One could argue that the local patrons are aware of the inedible (lowfat and tasteless) meal choices.
Just hope that no “tourists” show up
I personally avoid swimming when seals are around and if there have been shark sightings.
I also try to not swim at dawn or dusk, around fishing areas, inlets or in extremely murky conditions.
After all we are in the know and we have a choice.
