I am currently in the middle of my own little long distance cycling adventure from SLO to San Diego. Tomorrow I’ll be going from Santa Monica all the way back home to SD and I am having trouble finding safe bike routes. I have been warned that highway 1 can be precarious through the Long Beach area and am looking for route recommendations, or general tips for cycling through the area that I should be aware of?
I live in LB. You can take PCH to Palos Verdes Blvd and into San Pedro…scenic and less traffic. Once in San Pedro take Anaheim Blvd to the LA River Bike Path just past the 710. Anaheim thru LB is better than PCH IMO though still a bit sketchy especially later in the day. I’ve ridden it a bunch without issue though not lately. The bike path will take you to the beach path which you can take to Belmont Shore and rejoin PCH.

Good luck!

This is a good way to go but keep in mind sometimes there are a lot of trucks on Anaheim. You can also do Sepulveda Blvd. which turns into Willow. The LA River bike path can be caught at Willow.
