Kurt Kinetic Road Machine question

I just got one. In looking at the installation instructions it says that you have to adjust the folding legs for the size of the tire (4 possible positions). The instructions say that the trainer comes from the factory in position 1 to fit all bike sizes but that I should adjust to make sure that the tire is 1-1 1/2 inches from the floor. It lists the positions as follows:

Position 1 - 28.75" (maximum tire o.d.)
2 - 27.04"
3 - 23.80"
4 - 20.90"

This is probably a dumb question but what is the “maximum tire o.d.”? My only guess is tire width. I’ll have my road bike in the trainer exclusively and it is a 700 wheel. Which position should I be using?

OD = Outside Diameter

I have 700C wheels and use position #1. You should be able to use #1 or #2.

Where can I find the outside diameter for my wheel?

Click on http://www.bikeforums.net/archive/index.php/t-43754.html. Also, check Sheldon Brown’s web site.

I would forget about OD. 700C wheels are roughly the same size as 27" wheels (700C is a few mm smaller in diameter than 27"). Position 1 or 2 is what you should use to get adequate clearance from the ground.

If you change it from Position 1, let me know how it goes. I’ve had mine in the default setup ever since I got it. I figure if it makes a difference, they would have put it in more places than the installation manual, which no self-respecting person ever needs to read.

This is why I like ST - you learn something knew every day. I did not even know there was multiple adjustments like this on my KK unit. I just took it out of the box 3 years ago, set it up and have been riding on it that way for three years!! :slight_smile:
